Porsche has revealed its latest concept supercar – the Porsche Speedster, or to be precise the Porsche 911 Speedster.
It’s an update of the June 1948 Porsche 356 Speedster and appropriately unveiled in the same month as the original model of the Forties, marking 70 years since the appearance of the 356. The original model was a lightweight, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive, two-door sports car available in both hardtop and soft-top options.
The 2018 Porsche Speedster boasts 500 horsepower and is made form modern materials. However, Porsche, in a nod to the 356 has kept the type of extras that are the norm today out of the new supercar, i.e. things like satnav apparatus and a radio. The manufacturer says the concept is pure and the execution “historically accurate”, with the main emphasis being on delivering a “pure driving experience”. The Porsche Speedster made its appearance at the ’70 years Porsche sportscar’ celebrations in Zuffenhausen and the concept study offers a glimpse of a potential series-production version, although this model may not be presented until 2019.
There is even some question over whether it will appear in 2019, with many believing that Porsche will not make a decision about going ahead with production for several months yet, which could mean it won’t be available to buy until 2020. When it does appear, motoring journalists believe Porsche purists will snap it up.
The characteristics of the Porsche Speedster include the shorter window frame with a more inclined windscreen and correspondingly shortened side windows.
These features give the sports car study an even stockier profile with a very low fly line, which is reminiscent of its predecessors such as the Porsche 356.
A special rear cover made of carbon fibre connects behind the front seats, covering a roll-over protection structure and featuring a ‘double bubble.
As dictated by the historic original, the Speedster also features a light-weight soft cover instead of a hard convertible top. This cover protects the car interior from rain when parked, says Porsche, and is attached using eight Tenax fasteners.
Porsche said: “Speedster variants of sports car models, which combine open-top driving pleasure with distinctive driving dynamics, have been part of the company history since 1952.”
