NONWICK – My 1967 Ford Mustang Now has Fresh Front Suspension

I’ve been quiet on here about this one. That’s because enthusiasm and progress slow as you enter the tougher parts of project car hell fun. My 1967 Ford Mustang sits as a sort of table in my garage at the moment. It’s the wiring that really gives me pause and a brain itch. The process of putting all these colorful strands in their correct locations should be an easy enough task, and even a relaxing time occupier. It’s the opposite, really, and I hate it. So instead of staring at my frustration, I’ve decided to jump to a different part of the build that makes sense inside my brain: turning nuts and bolts in order to put the front suspension in place.

To get started, I needed to remove one last piece of the old suspension puzzle. When removing the old bits, I didn’t realize that I’d need stuff bolted in place to help get the strut rods out. These will otherwise just want to spin while I create new and interesting curse words. To get the old ones out, I simply bolted in the lower control arms to hold them in place. But to hold the lower control arms in place, I should bolt in the spindles. Well… in order to hold those in place, I need the upper control arms where they belong. Since I’m going this far, I may as well also add in the shocks and springs.

That’s how I went from a strut rod removal idea to may as well do the whole front suspension while I’m here. Now, the reality is that it’s all bolted in place but nothing is torqued to spec yet. Still, it’s in there, and that sort of accomplishment feels great, especially since this is all stuff I’ve never done before.

My next steps include making sure everything that needs a hit from the grease gun gets that, torquing everything down properly, and then moving on to the steering bits and the front sway bar I ordered, to fully tie that front end together. Then I need to order front brakes so I can put a set of wheels and tires under the car.

To fully pull that off, I still need to find a rear axle. I see a handful of Craigslist and I see the fresh stuff for sale in the various spots. In order to turn this into a roller, I may go with a used axle setup to start and upgrade if needed down the road. My goal in turning this into a roller is to be able to tow it to my local shop and have them finish the wiring because I really, truly hate doing it. Still, I may suck it up and dive back in since I’ve come this far. I have wires running into the engine bay and into the rear of the car. I need to clean up everything that lives in the dash area. Really, I’m not that far, but I’m also nowhere close… if that makes sense. If you’ve done wiring, I think you’ll understand.

Regardless, this one is still happening. It’s not sitting in a lot like the Benz wagon (even though, yes, that one is still happening too).
