irst stand-alone Mercedes-AMG SUV in AMG division’s history

Mercedes-AMG is making a new step to differentiate its model lineup from that of Mercedes. Following the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door coupe, Mercedes-AMG GT, and Mercedes-AMG SL, Mercedes’ sports division will launch an electric super SUV successor to the GLE 63 in 2026 and unveiled the first teaser.

For the first time in its 57-year history, Mercedes-AMG will develop an SUV completely in-house. This is the second model to be built on the new dedicated electric platform, the AMG.EA, developed by AMG, and will launch in 2026.
The year before, Mercedes-AMG will launch a pure electric successor to the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door coupe, that will inaugurate the new AMG.EA platform.

According to the press release, Mercedes describes the new SUV as the “first high-performance SUV ‘Born in Affalterbach’”. The first test cars will hit the roads this fall.

Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, said, “Our new high-performance architecture follows a clear philosophy: ‘AMG First, EV Second’. This means that the vehicles not only excel as electric vehicles but also embody the core AMG qualities of emotion and performance.”

According to rumors, Mercedes-AMG will unveil a concept before launch, probably in 2025, similar to the Vision AMG concept, which foreshadows the electric successor to the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door coupe. Similar in size to the Vision AMG concept, unveiled in May 2022, the SUV will be 5,100 mm long and have a wheelbase of over 3,000 mm. According to inside sources, the interior will be spacious and modular. However, from the first teaser unveiled by Mercedes-AMG, a rather flat silhouette can be seen, and certainly, for aerodynamic reasons, the height will be lower than the current AMG GLE 63 S.

The AMG.EA platform utilizes new axial-flow engines built by specialists at YASA, the British firm acquired by Mercedes-Benz. These engines stand out for their compact dimensions, high torque, minimal heat release, and smooth running.

One engine weighs just 24 kg and develops 486 PS and 800 Nm. The models built on the AMG.EA platform will have two engines one for each axle. Thus, the new models will develop 972 PS and 1,600 Nm in total. A three-engine version is also in development, with two for the rear axle, according to rumours.

The drive train will be produced in the Unterturkheim plant and the model will be assembled at the Sindelfingen plant.
