Grandparents have had this s60 since they bought it new in 2002. It currently has 117,150 miles on it. However, 110k of those miles were put on from 2002-2010, with the other 7k being put on in the last 14 years. Essentially, the car has barely been driven in the last decade. Now that I can drive, they’ve offered for me to take the car. I love the car, but I’m somewhat hesitant to do so given it’s 22 years old. Just wondering what those with more experience with these cars think about this.
Just some more information about this car:
-2.4T FWD
-Well maintained
-Garage kept for all of its life
-Car is (in my opinion) in really good shape cosmetically for its age
Recent service history:

Recent service history:
- 116k miles, exhaust cam, timing cam, timing belt replaced after oil leak (no oil pressure, not sure whether timing belt went out and it caused the exhaust cam and other components to be damaged, or the exhaust cam went out and the timing belt was replaced because the mechanic saw it was worn – timing belt replaced first time at 105k miles in 2009)
- Oil change at 116k miles
- Driver airbag replaced (recall)
- Rear and front brake pads at 115k miles
The car’s got some things that I think need to be fixed:
- Passenger door can only be locked by pulling the lock, doesn’t lock or unlock with central locking system
- Car makes a little rattling from the back when going over bumps, rough roads
- Small oil leak since the exhaust cam, timing cam, and timing belt were replaced. Given its age, PCV valve maybe?
- Rides a little rough, this and the rattling might indicate struts (?), shocks (?) need to be replaced (front struts replaced at 108k miles, 2010) I did hear this generation of s60 or the model in general has a firmer ride, but I don’t know whats firm and whats abnormally firm
- Idle is a little rough, with an intermittent like whooshing, whirring, (dont know how to describe it) noise, could just be ac (still blows cold)
So, just wanted peoples thoughts on this. Would it make for a good first car? With it being driven so little in the last decade and a half, what should I look to have inspected, replaced, etc? Should I have the 150k 20 year service done? Just in general should I expect this car to be reliable? I have heard that these 5 cyl engines and the aisin transmissions are pretty indestructible. (I’m pretty familiar with volvo and their high repair/parts costs so that would be no surprise when car gets repairs/maintained)
Feel free to ask any service history questions. I have the whole service history available
