We keep our houses clean to get rid of the dust that collects on surfaces and gives us the sniffles. However, the amount of dust in indoor air increases during the winter months. Why is this the case? Local HVAC, roofing and chimney repair contractor Hader Solutions explains more below.

The Need to Stay Indoors

It all boils down to the need to stay indoors in the winter. When you use the furnace or any heating system for warmth, your skin tends to dry out more often. You shed dead skin as a result until it becomes a part of the dust found in your indoor air. The more people you live with at home, the more skin is shed, which means more dust to deal with.

Staying indoors during the colder months also means the windows and doors have to remain closed for longer periods of time. Pets are kept inside the house more as well, and often homeowners don’t have the enthusiasm to do deep cleaning. With the lack of passive ventilation and the fact that pets also shed hair and dander, dust can indeed wreak havoc on your home in the winter.

Dealing With Dust in the Winter

Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to make it a bit easier on both your sanity and your health when you’re dealing with too much dust indoors. When dusting your indoor fixtures, start from the top down. Consider hard flooring so you can remove rugs and carpets, which can trap dust. And of course, schedule duct sealing and cleaning with a local HVAC contractor.

As far as your HVAC system is concerned, you should consider investing in high-MERV filters, which can help reduce dust and other airborne contaminants better than the weak filters the local hardware store sells. When dusting your home, be sure to keep the HVAC vent on. In doing so, the unit will pull air through the filter and recirculate clean air throughout the house.
