Slate Auto, a Michigan-based electric vehicle startup, recently debuted its inaugural model: a minimalist yet customizable pickup truck. The company has some heavy hitters backing it, including former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and current Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

What is Slate Auto?

Low Price

The vehicle, known simply as the Slate Truck, is designed with simplicity and affordability in mind. It’s a 2-door, two-seat regular cab with a smaller footprint than other entry-level trucks like the Ford Maverick. Where it really diverges from the pack is that it omits standard amenities that most car owners take for granted. For example, the Slate Truck has no power locks or windows. It also lacks an infotainment system, instead relying on a companion app for such functions. There are even plans to offer a conversion kit to transform the truck into an SUV. Buyers can opt for these features, but they will be sold as separate accessories. Estimated driving ranges are 150 miles for the standard battery pack and 240 for the optional upgraded unit.

Slate CEO Chris Barman, a former Chrysler executive, emphasizes that the modular approach to the vehicle empowers consumers to tailor the vehicle to their specific needs and budgets. This represents a significant departure from the traditional automotive manufacturing and sales model of purchasing pre-configured vehicles with fixed sets of standard and optional equipment.

Prototypes

The novel launch program saw several prototype vehicles take to California streets wrapped in advertisements for fictious companies. The goal was to spark curiosity among the public and build engagement to encourage customers to pre-order a vehicle, which they can do for a $50 refundable deposit right now.

Coming Soon

The company plans to build a factory somewhere in the Midwest, but a final location hasn’t been decided upon as of this writing. A $25,000 MSRP is the targeted starting price, with potential tax credits lowering that to around $20,000. Deliveries are expected to begin sometime in 2026.

CG Says:

Slate’s novel approach to design, engineering, and marketing, not to mention the financial backing of Silicon Valley heavyweights, could give it a leg up over the various automotive startups that have come and gone in recent years. It remains to be seen if the company can hit on their pricing and delivery date targets, but we’ll certainly be keeping a close eye on this one.
