Whenever you get into a car, there’s a risk of being involved in an accident. Unfortunately, they’re a leading cause of deaths in the United States, with over 120 people killed every day. That’s only including fatal accidents. Approximately 2.6 million people visit the emergency department each year for injuries resulting from a car accident. Regardless of whether the accident is small or major, it can be helpful to know what to do if it happens.

First Steps After an Accident

Having a car accident is a frightening experience. Even a small bump causes adrenaline to pump around the body. If you find yourself in an accident, it’s vital to stay calm and follow these steps:

  1. Get out of the car safely

Get out of the car safely, if you’re well enough to do so. Depending on the severity and location of the car accident, you will need to get out of the car, and do so safely. You’ll be in a state of shock, so take extra care to look around you before opening any doors. Depending on the location of the accident, you may even need to move the car to a safer spot. You should only do this if the condition of the vehicle allows and if you’re able to drive safely.

  1. Call the emergency services

Call for help if needed. Sometimes, you’ll need to call the police or the fire brigade. Check others involved and call an ambulance, if required.

  1. Exchange details

When everyone is safe, exchange details with other drivers involved and any witnesses. This will be vital to your claim. Note down registration plates, insurance company details, names, addresses, and any other details you think are relevant for the accident claim.

  1. Take photos

Take photos of the cars and the damage sustained. It may also be useful to take some of the surrounding area where the accident happened and of the road conditions. Anything that could be relevant to a claim should be photographed.

  1. Seek medical attention

If an ambulance hasn’t been needed to attend, it’s still important to visit your doctor or the local emergency room to get checked out. For example, injuries like whiplash may not show immediate symptoms. Getting checked out for injuries might be important if you later want to claim against them. Don’t forget about psychological effects too. If you experience these, even further down the line, speak to a doctor.

  1. Contact your insurance company

Once you’re home and settled, the next steps after an accident involve contacting your insurance company. Provide only the facts and key details, and avoid admitting any fault. If there is a police report, submit this as well. If you’re taking time off work, you’ll also need to inform your employer.
