As the Irish new car market continues to evolve in 2025 with sales of EVs and plug-in hybrids showing growth so far this year, some models continue to rise to the top.
New car registrations in Ireland rose by 3.5% in the first half of 2025, reaching 81,750 units, according to the latest figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).
In terms of market share by engine type, petrol leads at 27.23%, followed by hybrid (22.77%), diesel (17.26%), electric (16.67%), and plug-in hybrid (14.46%).
This year’s bestsellers reveal a strong preference for SUVs and crossovers, which continue to dominate the market.
According to the latest registration data, here are the five bestselling cars in Ireland for 2025 so far:
1. Hyundai Tucson
Topping the charts, the Hyundai Tucson continues to be Ireland’s most popular car in 2025. The current Tucson received a facelift last year to keep it looking fresh. It offers contemporary styling and an otherwise well-rounded package that’s practical for families and commuters alike. It’s offered with the choice of diesel, hybrid or plug-in hybrid.

2. Toyota RAV4
Coming in at number two is the evergreen Toyota RAV4, a long-time favourite in the Irish market. The RAV4’s reputation for reliability continues to draw buyers, while the fuel-efficient hybrid hits just the right note too. It’s a solid all-rounder, combining rugged SUV looks with space, comfort and efficiency.

3. Toyota Yaris Cross
The compact Toyota Yaris Cross is proving hugely popular, particularly with drivers who want the elevated driving position and style of an SUV but in a smaller footprint. Sharing many components with the Yaris hatchback, the Yaris Cross offers a frugal hybrid powertrain at a good price, along with the practicality and compactness of a small SUV.

4. Kia Sportage
The Kia Sportage holds firm as one of the top choices in the compact SUV segment and finds itself in the top-five bestselling cars overall. With its distinctive design, practicality and comprehensive equipment, the Sportage offers great value for money. It’s just been facelifted to sharpen it up and is offered with a range of engines including diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid.

5. Skoda Octavia
Rounding out the top five is the Skoda Octavia, a perennial favourite among Irish drivers who want a practical, spacious and well-equipped family car. While not an SUV, the Octavia’s reputation, generous boot space and value for money keeps it highly competitive. It’s available as a hatchback or estate with the choice of petrol or diesel engines.
