The Volvo ES90 has made its long-awaited debut as the brand’s new flagship EV. The ES90 is effectively the S90 sedan’s EV replacement and will sit at the top of the Volvo range.

Arriving as a liftback, the rear of the ES90 features a tailgate that is not unlike that found in the Tesla Model S. This should be a boon for usability with a larger opening compared to a traditional trunk. The ES90 will offer 15 cubic feet of space with the rear seats in place and 26 cubic feet with them folded.
Proportionally, the ES90 carries a bit of resemblance to the Polestar 2 with its slightly raised, almost crossover-like ride height. Volvo says the ES90 was intentionally designed to blend all the best attributes of a sedan, a crossover, and a fastback into one vehicle.
The front of the ES90 features an evolution of the brand’s iconic “Thor’s hammer” headlights with segmented DRLs that now pierce into the bumper/grille area a bit. Of course, there is no grille here as this is an EV, though it still carries the brand’s asymmetrical logo across where a traditional grille would have been.
The rear of the ES90 is also very much in line with that of the EX90 SUV, with c-shaped lower taillights paired with segmented light strips flanking either side of the rear window.

Volvo has made a name for themselves in crafting uniquely soothingly minimal Scandinavian interiors, and the ES90 is no exception. The design builds upon that of the EX90 SUV with clean lines, warm wood trim with warm backlighting, and plenty of interesting, thoughtful touches like glass controls for both volume and music tuning.
A 14.5-inch vertically-oriented center touchscreen and a 9-inch digital driver’s display will run Volvo’s new Google-based software system. Buyers will be able to upgrade to a 1,610-watt Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system with ceiling and headrest speakers as well as a special mode that replicates the acoustics of London’s Abbey Road Studios. All ES90s get a full glass roof, and buyers will be able to select an electrochromic dimming version that blocks out 99.9 percent of UV rays. Rear seat passengers will be treated to available individually reclining seats as well, along with their own climate control zones.

Being a Volvo, the ES90 features a raft of advanced safety features, including a lidar sensor, five radar sensors, seven cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors, all driven by Nvidia’s new Drive AGX Orin primary core computer system. This system will evolve over time with future software updates allowing for increasing levels of driving assistance.
The ES90 will be offered with three powertrain options. First, the base single-motor model will deliver 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque giving it a 0-60 time of 6.7 seconds. Next, the mid-range dual-motor edition makes 442 hp and 492 lb-ft of torque, good for a 0-60 sprint of 5.3 seconds. Those looking for even more power will find it in the top-of-the-range dual-motor performance model, which will generate an impressive 670 hp and 635 lb-ft of torque for an equally impressive 3.9 second 0-60 time.

The Volvo ES90 has been built on an advanced 800-volt architecture that allows for impressive DC fast charging speeds. Single motor variants will be capable of drawing 300 kW from a DC fast charger and be able to add 171 miles of charge in just 10 minutes. Dual-motor ES90s will be capable of an even more impressive 350 kW charging rate and be able to add 186 miles of charge in 10 minutes. All ES90s will feature Plug and Charge capability as well as bi-directional charging.

Single-motor variants will get an 88.0-kWh battery, good for an estimated 404 miles of range on the notoriously optimistic European WLTP cycle. Dual-motor versions will get a larger 102.0-kWh battery capable of roughly 435 miles of range on the same cycle. Volvo says the ES90 features a 0.25 drag coefficient, the lowest of any vehicle the company has ever designed.
The Volvo ES90 will initially be available in a number of European countries, including Germany, France, and the UK. US availability was not specifically mentioned, though Volvo did say the ES90 will launch in additional markets at the end of this year and in 2026.
