The Drive has relaunched the YouTube presence that took the site’s name into the mainstream along with presenters like Chris Harris and Matt Farah. Joey Rassool, the bearded face of the revamped channel is quick to point out that he isn’t those guys. Even if he somehow has the chops to someday reach the same heights as his predecessors, he notes that while he’s done his fair share of track work, it’s been behind the wheel of a Toyota Yaris, meaning his “butt dyno” is rather inexperienced when it comes to working with the kind of firepower available in modern showrooms.
Then, like a savvy politician – if such a thing exists – Joey leveraged that naïveté to tell us that it actually makes him the perfect candidate for the day’s task: to test Chevrolet’s three current Corvette models, from Stingray to E-Ray and Z06, to see how each one varies, if a first-time driver (like a record number of C8 buyers) can sense the minute differences at play, and if the pair of six-figure entrants are actually worth their respective upcharges over the “still an amazing deal” base car. This line of thinking makes some sense, and we’d never pass on hearing an LT6 in action anyway, so let’s go along for the ride, or rather, The Drive!

Heading out in the Stingray on a lead-follow lap of the National Corvette Museum’s Motorsports Park, we get to experience Rass’ first taste of Small-Block power. Heading into its sixth model year and the third since being so thoroughly overshadowed by the widebody models, it’s easy to forget just how good the current ‘Vette is in its most basic form. In fact, it was so planted and easy-going out there that he didn’t even notice that he had exceeded his personal record for top track speed by around 20 mph – on NCM’s tight circuit vs the previous mark which was set at the, well, bigger “Big Willow” configuration of California’s favorite on the market raceway!
With that baseline set, it was time to test the Z06 against the video’s premise that there could be a VHS to DVD to Blu-Ray to 4K plateau-effect at a point as fast cars get even faster. What was his verdict? Which pre-ZR1 ‘Vette does The Drive recommend? Well, like someone who isn’t trying to steal clicks and also happens to have a class to teach, we are going to make you watch to find out! Enjoy this one, Corvette Nation, and as always, remember, if we show up in significant numbers, America’s Favorite Sports Car will be featured in even more video tests!
