I recently embarked on a journey to modernize my 2005 Volvo XC90 T5 by adding Bluetooth functionality, and I wanted to share my experience in hopes that it might help others looking to make similar upgrades. Here’s a detailed account of my research, decision-making process, installation, and overall review of the new head unit.
Context
- Vehicle: 2005 Volvo XC90 T5
- Original setup lacked Bluetooth and AUX options, limiting my audio connectivity.
Motivation
Driven by my desire to listen to music seamlessly while driving, I explored various solutions to integrate Bluetooth into my older model XC90.
Research
My initial research led me to various Bluetooth kits, which were either too pricey or didn’t fit my car’s audio system. I considered:
- Cheap adapters, which my car couldn’t accommodate
- Bluetooth kits like GROM and Mr12Volt, though I found them comparably pricey for just adding Bluetooth (& USB).
After extensive research, I stumbled upon aftermarket head units as a viable alternative. They came in two main styles:
- Variant A: Fits on top of the dashboard where the original navigation screen is.
- Variant B: Replaces the radio control on the dashboard.
I preferred Variant B for its seamless, integrated look, reminiscent of OEM designs. I discovered the “Legend Kit,” priced starting at $350 USD, which was exactly what I was looking for, but its high cost and dubious availability through a Facebook group led me to keep searching. Eventually, I found a unit that looked similar to the Legend Kit but at a much lower price, which I decided to purchase.
Installation
- The installation was challenging and took about 4 hours, involving multiple YouTube tutorials.
- No damage was done during installation, but careful handling of the plastic components was necessary.
Optics
- The unit looks fantastic and integrates well with the XC90’s dashboard, resembling the more expensive Legend Kit.
- The user interface wasn’t to my liking, but since I primarily use Apple CarPlay, it wasn’t a dealbreaker.
Functions
- The unit supports steering wheel controls, Bluetooth, two USB ports, AUX, wireless Apple CarPlay, an optional radio antenna, and provisions for a rear camera and 4G connectivity.
- I opted for a configuration with 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, and a quad-core processor, which offers decent speed though not as smooth as an iPad. In hindsight, knowing that it works well, I would consider upgrading to a more performative version for an even smoother experience.
Downsides
- Initially, I was concerned about the unit draining the battery because it wouldn’t turn off when the car was turned off. However, once I followed the correct start-up and shut-down process, the unit turned off as it should.
- The parking sensors became nonfunctional, which seems fixable with an additional speaker. However, if you plan to install a rear camera, losing the parking sensors might be less critical.
- The seller’s support was not great, but they did respond to my inquiries, which was somewhat reassuring.
Verdict
I’m very satisfied with the upgrade and the enhanced functionality it brings to my 2005 XC90. For those considering this unit, I highly recommend it. The installation process is manageable, and the benefits are well worth the effort.
