First of all im from Sweden and have been lurking around for a while. This is a great place so I will give you something back.
I want to show you guys how I upgrade my S80 V8 from High Performance to Premiun sound.
The never ending question if a original subwoofer fits or can be used in a S80 is: Yes! No problem! The tricky one is to activate the feature in CarConfig.
That can be arrange in many ways. The most user friendly way is to use V-dash. But I manage to do it in another way.
It has do be done in a 2 way step. The first step is to activate the Premium sound amp in Car-Config before you install your amp. This is important due to the ITP lock later.
The second is disable the ITP. I will try to explain how ITP works:
The ITP(infotainment theft protection) works like a padlock for the components inside the MOST chain. A serial TOC-list with all the nodes serial numbers is stored both in CEM and in ICM. The serial TOC is compared when the CEM wakes up. If all serial number match the system will start up. If there is a serial number that do not match, CEM shuts down the “faulty” node. This is just a simple way to prevent use of stolen nodes or when a node is broken or malfunction. Volvo car corp use the ITP 30786292 just for this reason, to diagnose a faulty node or when they have to install a new one. they cant install a new node within the MOST without opening this lock.
Easiest way to explain this is to think that the ICM is the loop and CEM is the lock it self. To get a different node(like the subwoofer) to work you have to let this lock to be open for all time.
ITP software 30786292 (downloaded in a Volvo dealer), is not a software, it is a “key” to unlock the “padlock”. It means that ICM and CEM will unlock and not use the serial list anymore. (This “key” is also available in V-dash by the way). The lock have to be opened for the subwoofer to work.
NOTE: If you ever do a software upgrade to any node inside the MOST-chain at a Volvo dealer or shop later, the software algoritm from Volvos database will close the padlock and serials will once again be read and subwoofer will no longer be accepted .
Premium amplifier is no big deal to get it to work actually, the deal is the subwoofer. The difference between a V70 and S80 is that the S80 do not have a subwoofer feature.
Cables fuse and MOST signal are missing totally. This have to be installed.
Find the number 3 eletrical center marked as blue. At location FD3 you will se that the fuse and wiring is missing. The Subwoofer needs power from that location in order to work as it is supposed to to. I solder the wiring with a cable from a salvage car in a local junkyard. Fuse is 25 amps.
When this is finished I installed the MOST wiring. Also salvage from a stricken S60 2014. You need a Y-MOST cable to get it to work. I connect it from my nearest MOST node RTI(MMM).
MOST is a simple and cheap optical wire made of plastic(not to be compared with a OPTOCABLE that is real fiberoptics.) MOST is not bendable at all. I installed the cable outside the existing cable tunnel harnes.
When MOST was installed I measure where the subwoofer will be fitted and then mount it on the existing wooden floor trim in the trunk.
Drilled out holes for the cables and screw the subwoofer tight in place.
Change the Carconfig status Subwoofer to YES with CarConfig tool or using V-dash. (the circle red) In my native language “Bashögtalare” means Subwoofer and Ja means Yes.
After doing this and the car resets the Sub menu will pop up in ICM and youre done.
Next I will install the speakers. I choosed Harman kardon speakers from later models. As i personally think they sound better than Dynaudio when the subwoofer is installed.
As mentioned before I installed the Premium AUD node first of all. AMP is located under the pass.seat.
I also made a custom made cable for the rear seat headphones jacks. A great feature if you ask me. NOTE: You do not need to change CarConfig to get the headphone center to work. It can be installed in any car with a headphone jack outlet on the amplifier. There is a string in CarConfig, if you enable it, CEM will lluminate the consol with the connector at C 22. This can be done with simply any connector controlled by the illuminater switch instead. By curiosity I enabled it in CarConfig.
Mid speakers and tweeters.
Ok this is the end of this modification. With all the speakers and premium amplifier the sound is much better than High performance, but the magic is when the Subwoofer kicks in. Well balanced and a lot more deep in the overall sound. Well worth if you ask me.
Sorry for typos or other language errors, English is not my native. I hope you still understand the most of the text.
Cheers!!
