A Toyota door lock actuator class action lawsuit alleges a recall should have been issued years ago.
The Toyota doors allegedly cannot be locked or unlocked because the door lock actuators fail in these models:
- 2010–2024 Toyota 4Runner
- 2013–Present Toyota RAV4
- 2014–Present Toyota Highlander
- 2010–2022 Toyota Prius
- 2007–Present Toyota Tundra
- 2012–2024 Toyota Camry
- 2012–2024 Toyota Camry Hybrid
- 2014–Present Toyota Corolla
- 2005–2023 Toyota Tacoma
- 2007–2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser
Whether a vehicle owner uses the power locks or a remote key fob, the doors supposedly still can’t be locked or unlocked because of failed actuators.
Two nearly identical Toyota door lock actuator class action lawsuits were filed in Texas (Mixon v. Toyota and Flick v. Toyota), and those are now consolidated into one.
According to the consolidated class action, Toyota knew the door lock actuators were defective before the vehicles were first sold but Toyota supposedly concealed the defects from consumers.
And because Toyota supposedly concealed the door lock actuator problems, the class action lawsuit alleges all statutes of limitations should be ignored.
Instead of repairing the alleged actuator problems prior to first selling the vehicles, the plaintiffs assert Toyota decided to market and sell the vehicles knowing the actuators would fail and occupants wouldn’t be able to unlock or lock the doors.
According to the Toyota owners who sued, their vehicles have lost their values because of the door lock actuators which are manufactured by Japanese company AISIN.
Without a recall, Toyota customers typically must pay for door lock actuator repairs, and dealers allegedly refuse to pay for repairs even when the vehicles are covered by warranties. The class action alleges Toyota tells customers the warranties don’t come into play because the door lock actuators are “wear” and “maintenance” parts.
Since the class actions were consolidated, Toyota has filed a motion to transfer the case to a previous judge, which is where things stand.
