Based on the latest vehicle registration data released by the road transport department (JPJ), BYD is currently the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) brand in Malaysia as of February 28, 2025. With a year-to-date (YTD) total of 1,139 units – the bulk coming in February (634 units) – the Chinese brand continued to stay at the top ahead of Proton which saw 1,001 registrations (580 units in February).
Meanwhile, Tesla, which endured a poor start in January by placing 14th, shot up the list to take the final spot on the podium. With 443 units registered in February alone (January saw just 13 units), the American brand’s YTD total currently stands at 456 units.
Tesla’s rise up the list means BMW is displaced to fourth place with 311 units (81 units in February), while Xpeng and Zeekr swap places, with the former taking fifth place with 155 units (74 units in February). The 11 units of Zeekr vehicles registered in February is nearly 11% of the 101 units the brand managed during the first month of the year, with the YTD total being 112 units for sixth place.
Further down the list, Porsche saw 51 units registered in February for a YTD total of 89 units, but this figure should include recon cars that JPJ includes in its data. After the German brand is MG with 29 units (YTD 82 units), MINI with 40 units (YTD 74 units) and Great Wall Motor with 23 units (YTD 66 units).
Outside the top 10, we have Mercedes-Benz in 11th with 26 units registered last month (YTD 61 units), while smart saw 30 units (YTD 56 units). Leapmotor slipped a few ranks from its 11th spot in January to end up in 13th with a YTD total of 43 units, 13 units coming in February. It is followed closely by Volvo with a YTD total of 42 units (18 units in February).
Newcomer Denza launched its first EV, the D9, in February this year, which meant no registrations took place in January. However, it managed 34 units in the second month of 2025, giving it the 15th spot on the list.
Hyundai also saw a resurgence in February with 23 units to end up in 16th after the first two months of the year – the Korean brand registered zero EVs based on the data. Completing the top 20 is Chery (YTD 22 units) in 17th, Dongfeng (YTD 18 units) in 18th and Neta (YTD 16 units), which managed to fend off Audi in 20th with a YTD total of 12 units.
