Audi’s modern S and RS-badged performance cars have a reputation for speed, but not even an R8 or RS6 could stay with this 32-year-old Ingolstadt sedan. The modified S4 is so quick it once held the world record for the world’s fastest sedan, and now it could be yours.

Though it’s badged S4, this Audi probably isn’t the S4 you’re thinking of. When Audi first used the name, it applied it to a go-faster version of its midsize 100, the forerunner to today’s A6/S6. A turbocharged 2.2-liter, five-cylinder engine delivered 227 hp (230 PS) to all four wheels through a manual transmission and, according to Audi, was potent enough for a 150 mph (240 km/h) top speed.

This 1993 A4 still has a turbocharged inline five, a manual transmission and all-wheel drive, but it’s rather naughtier these days thanks to the vision and determination of Jeff Gerner, the owner of Audi specialist Four Ring Performance in Missouri.
Serious Firepower
The original engine is stuffed full of billet parts and fitted with a Borg Warner S400SX turbo the size of a melon, the upshot being a ridiculous 1,155 hp (1,171 PS) and 706 lb ft (957 Nm). Oh yeah, and those are at-the-wheels figures.
Stock S4s never troubled the far end of their 170 mph (274 km/h) speedometers, but this one hit a peak speed of 261 mph (420 km/h) and averaged 238 mph (383 km/h) during Bonneville Speed Week in 2012 with Jeff behind the wheel.
Cars & Bids
Naturally it needed plenty of other modifications not related to the engine to make those velocities possible, including composite fire- and shatter-proof windows, a six-point roll cage, fire suppression system and a parachute, all of which are still present.
It looks like it’s just waiting for someone to take it out on another Bonneville record run, but the seller claims it could be put on the road (in some states) without much work – and if the next owner was suitably insane…
