We’ve all had a moment where we believe one purchase will change everything. For me, it was when I bought my first Prada bag. As a young woman on Wall Street, I was convinced it would elevate my life—and make me feel more successful and worthy. That bag wasn’t just a fashion accessory; it felt like guaranteed validation. But the thrill faded quickly, leaving me to ask: Why did I think this bag would change my life!?
I call this experience “The Prada Predicament.”
I’m sure you can relate. Whether it’s a bag, vehicle, or vacation, we often look to material things to validate our worth and give us a sense of belonging. We believe that if we just have that one item, we’ll feel more confident and somehow “enough.” But the reality is, that no external thing can make us feel whole.
This led me to a critical lesson: prosperity doesn’t come from what we own—it comes from within.
In a world where social media shows us polished, highlight-reel lives, it’s easy to think accumulating luxury items is the key to success. I felt that way when I bought my Prada bag. But after the initial excitement, I realized the bag hadn’t changed how I felt about myself. I was chasing validation through materialism, hoping the bag would fill a void that only inner work could heal.

Redefining True Prosperity: The 3 Pillars
Prosperity isn’t about how much money you have or the luxury items you own. It’s about well-being, spirituality, and relationships. These are the three pillars that shape true prosperity:
- Well-being: Prosperity starts with how you feel on the inside—mentally, emotionally, and physically.
- Spirituality: Prosperity is about knowing you are enough as you are.
- Healthy Relationships with People and Money: Building healthy relationships with both people and money creates lasting prosperity. Use money as a tool, not a status symbol.
Why Women Struggle with Money and the Designer Bag “Fix”
Over the years, I’ve learned that many women are uncomfortable talking about money due to how we were raised or societal pressures. We’re often taught to avoid money conversations, feeling ashamed of our financial situations—good or bad—so we turn to material items to make ourselves feel better. This is why retail therapy is so tempting. But no designer bag can fix deeper financial insecurities or emotional struggles.
Social media amplifies this issue. We see others looking perfect and think that if we buy what they have, we’ll feel complete, too. But that’s a false narrative. Impulse purchases may bring fleeting happiness, but they won’t solve underlying money challenges or feelings of inadequacy.
It’s not just about the money or the bag—it’s about the people in your life. Are they lifting you up, encouraging your authentic self, and supporting your growth? True prosperity is deeply connected to the relationships you nurture. Prosperity thrives in love, acceptance, and support, but it starts from within—knowing you are enough, regardless of others’ opinions.
When you truly believe in yourself, you’re not seeking validation from outside sources. You’re surrounded by love and support, but your sense of worth is never dependent on external approval.
Why Financial Literacy Matters: From Prada to Prosperity
Financial literacy is essential because it gives women the tools to break free from the cycle of emotional spending and build real wealth. Women often make most household financial decisions, yet many feel uncertain about managing money. By understanding our finances, we empower ourselves and set future generations up for success.
The Prada bag was a turning point for me. It symbolized my realization that material possessions wouldn’t bring true happiness. This journey led me to redefine prosperity—not as something you buy, but as something you cultivate from within.
At the end of the day, the things we own don’t define us—what matters most is how we live, who we surround ourselves with, and how we manage and grow our resources.
Remember, prosperity isn’t in the bag—it’s within you.
