Porsche’s production journey began in Zuffenhausen, Germany, with the completion of the first Porsche 356 on April 6, 1950. This marked the start of a significant era in sports car manufacturing. Over the years, Zuffenhausen has evolved into the central hub for Porsche’s sports car production, including models such as the 911, which has been in continuous production since 1964, as well as the 718 and the all-electric Taycan.
Albrecht Reimold, a member of the Executive Board for Production and Logistics at Porsche AG, emphasized the importance of Zuffenhausen, stating, “Zuffenhausen is and remains the home of our sports cars. It embodies pioneering spirit, state-of-the-art production technology and manufacturing quality.” The site has transformed from a small sports car manufacturer into a leading global producer of exclusive vehicles.
Initially, Porsche operated as a construction office in Zuffenhausen in 1938, but it was only after World War II that car production commenced. The first 52 units of the Porsche 356 were handcrafted in Austria before production moved to Stuttgart. The factory faced challenges during its early years, including occupation by Allied forces, which led to temporary arrangements for engine production.

By the end of 1950, Porsche had manufactured 317 units of the 356. The model gained popularity, leading to the establishment of additional production facilities. Over the decades, the site has seen continuous expansion and modernization to accommodate growing demand, including the production of front-engine models like the 928, 944, and 968.
The Zuffenhausen site has adapted to technological advancements, incorporating modern production methods, including the production of the Taycan. Innovations such as driverless transport systems and artificial intelligence are now part of the manufacturing process. The facility also houses specialized departments for custom vehicles and lightweight designs.
As Porsche celebrates 75 years of production in Zuffenhausen, it reflects on its history while looking forward to future advancements in automotive manufacturing, emphasizing its commitment to quality and innovation in sports car production.
