PROTON has officially launched the All-New PROTON X50 SUV, The compact SUV has been Malaysia’s best-selling B-segment SUV since it first hit Malaysian roads in 2020. Part of the company’s revitalised push, the PROTON X50 has completely changed expectations for its class and reset goalposts with over 140,000 units sold and because of what it is, the X50 has been Malaysia’s best-selling B-segment SUV for five straight years.
Developed in collaboration with Geely, based on their Binyue model, the X50 is a global success story, with over 1.2 million units sold across 51 countries. This latest major facelift model introduces comprehensive upgrades inside and out, offering customers an even more refined, dynamic, and intelligent driving experience. It is based on the Binyue facelift but with a lot of local input so that it works properly on Malaysia roads.
As stated in our preview article of this vehicle, it has changes to its styling front and back, a new simpler looking dashboard (sans fighter plane styling though), interior trim, a larger infotainment system, a different driver’s instrument cluster and a new four cylinder instead of three, turbocharged petrol engine to boot. Oh, localised development of the infotainment system means that it can understand Bahasa Melayu now. You can used BM to speak to the car rather than just English. Another notable new addition is the availability of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay from the start of sales. This is another good move by Proton in our opinion.

The details of the new 2025 PROTON X50 – Redefining the Standard in Design, Safety, Performance, and Connectivity
The All-New PROTON X50 ushers in a new era with a striking design evolution, enhanced ADAS Level 2, and a massive 14.6-inch infotainment display. One of its standout innovations is the world’s first Bahasa Melayu voice command system – a proud local-first that brings intuitive connectivity to more Malaysians in their everyday language.
Under the hood, the new 4 cylinder’ (instead of three) 1.5TD i-GT turbo petrol engine is paired to a similar as before 7-speed DCT. The combination delivers an impressive 133 kW (approximately 178hp)and 290 Nm of torque, achieving 0–100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds – 0.3 seconds quicker than its predecessor. Of course, this is when you are being aggressive and that the hold function is off – we found this out the hard way during out initial preview drive.
Coupled with a 4.7% improvement in fuel economy, it offers a perfect balance of power and efficiency.
Available in three well-equipped variants – Executive, Premium, and Flagship – the All-New PROTON X50 is built to match modern lifestyles while reaffirming PROTON’s vision for intelligent, forward-thinking mobility.
Of course, the X50 was unveiled prior to this launch event. It was displayed at Setia City Mall about two weeks earlier when PROTON announced that bookings were opened. The only thing left is actually how much the SUV costs, and now we know. BUT, most importantly, the early bird packages to enable the X50 to stave off the competition. Going by the recently slew of launches in the RM90k to RM150k segments, this is a good move. As you can see down below, the packages are attractive.
However, PROTON also stated that they’ve already received over 5,000 bookings of the X50 prior to the launch event this evening, making the X50 still the popular choice to get in its segment.
