In 2025, SUVs are pricier than ever. But, the Mahindra XUV700 bucks this trend by costing under $40,000 drive-away. Meanwhile, it’s loaded with tech, a full ADAS system, seven seats and stacks of standard features.

You’ve heard of luxury car tax, stamp duty and GST, and now there’s seemingly another tax on new cars: badge tax.
Even former, so-called affordable cars have jumped thousands of dollars in price over the last five years, and suddenly it can cost a small fortune to get your family something ‘nice’ for the daily commute, school pick-up, and occasional road-trip.
That was the case until Mahindra introduced its XUV700 medium SUV into Australia, a premium-feeling SUV with a list of standard equipment, mod-cons and little luxuries matching SUVs many times the price.
Starting from just $39,990 drive-away, the Mahindra XUV700 medium SUV also offers seven seats as standard, as well as a full Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and powerful turbocharged engine.
Looking out for hard-working Australians, emerging SUV upgraders and tech-forward early adopters, Mahindra has spent nearly 20 years in the Australian market in total. In this article, we delve into why the Mahindra XUV700 is the smart SUV choice for those shopping for value in Australia’s hotly contested medium SUV segment.
Does the Mahindra XUV700 have wireless Apple CarPlay?
The Mahindra XUV700 AX7 comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the AX7L comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
They’re just two premium features on a long list of standard equipment available for $39,990 drive-away, making the XUV700 an affordable premium SUV alternative.
Unlock the XUV700 and thin, aerodynamic door handles pop-out from the door – inviting you into a high-tech, premium-feeling interior. As you get comfortable, the electric driver’s seat automatically motors forward into your previous position, making it easier to get in.
Leather-feel upholstery is used throughout, and high-contrast silver stitching adds a touch of craftsmanship. The standard panoramic sunroof (which opens and closes electrically) makes for a light-filled cabin. Piano blacks and shadow-chrome accents finish off a modern, contemporary design.
The AX7L ups the ante even further with genuine leather used on touch-points such as the steering wheel and gear lever, and adds ventilated front seats, electric park brake and a 12-speaker Sony sound system. Parking is even easier in the AX7L with a 360-degree surround-view camera, and changing lanes is a more confident affair thanks to its live blind-spot camera view. At $3000 more, but still just $42,990 drive-away, the AX7L also adds LED headlights.
How big are the screens in the Mahindra XUV700? Does it have ADAS?
The Mahindra XUV700 offers a ‘digital cockpit’ with dual 10.25-inch high-resolution displays. Both the AX7 and AX7L come with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) as standard.
If you’re wondering, what’s the best tech SUV under $50K? It could be the Mahindra XUV700, which offers a suite of ADAS tech in an SUV for under $40,000 drive-away. In the XUV700’s case, that starts with adaptive cruise control (with stop-and-go functionality in the AX7L) and active lane-keeping, for confident, semi-autonomous driving on highways and road trips. Mahindra calls it Smart Pilot Assist.
Additional Mahindra tech features maximising safety include forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition and high beam assist. For passive safety, the XUV700 scored five stars in independent Global NCAP testing and comes with six airbags standard. The AX7L model adds a knee airbag for front occupants.

How much power does the Mahindra XUV700 have?
Both Mahindra XUV700 models come with 149kW of power and 380Nm of torque.
That’s thanks to the powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged ‘mStallion’ engine fitted as standard. Sitting proudly behind the Mahindra’s slotted, chrome front grille, this direct-injected engine puts plenty of muscle under your right foot, with peak power arriving at 5000rpm and peak torque available from just 1750rpm. That makes for more confident overtaking, towing (up to 1500kg braked) and open-road touring. The mStallion works with a six-speed automatic transmission.
Who is Mahindra?
From Mumbai, India, manufacturing giant Mahindra was established in 1945 and has been designing and engineering vehicles for decades. Mahindra first launched in Australia in 2007 and now has more than 70 dealers nationwide – and in 2025 and beyond, has plans to add more dealers in both city and regional areas.
Employing more than 260,000 people worldwide, Mahindra’s transformation from rural rugged to modern metro is a remarkable tale. Sitting in the XUV700, you wouldn’t think Mahindra had to prove itself with one of the toughest customers you can imagine – farmers in rural areas. Mahindra is the world’s best-selling manufacturer of tractors, and has now successfully applied its engineering expertise to high-tech family vehicles.
Having recently launched its compact XUV 3XO in Australia, alongside the medium XUV700, off-road-focused Scorpio, and S11 4X4 Pik-Up, Mahindra is now developing its first electric SUVs for the international and Australian markets.
Does the Mahindra XUV700 come standard with 18-inch wheels?
Both XUV700 models come standard with 18-inch wheels. Big wheels are part of a smart, clean design that blends effortlessly into an urban Australian environment.
With its standard LED daytime running lights and 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, the XUV700 would look at home on the streets of any inner-city suburb. Designed by Pratap Bose, chief design officer at Mahindra, the XUV700 features the brand’s new Twin Peaks logo, taking pride of place in the slotted front grille. Wide wheel tracks give an intentional overall stance, as do the prominent wheel haunches, especially at the rear. The LED arrow-tip tail-lights are unmissable at night.
In Australia, the XUV700 can come in Everest White, Midnight Black, Dazzling Silver or Red Rage.
