The Iconic Jaguar D-Type Going to Auction

Posted on February 25, 2025 By rehan.rafique No Comments on The Iconic Jaguar D-Type Going to Auction

One of the most historically significant Jaguar D-Types, the 1954 ‘OKV 2’, is set to go under the hammer at Broad Arrow’s 2025 Amelia Auction. Offered without reserve, this legendary Works competition car could fetch between $6.5 million and $8.5 million (between £5.3 million and £6.9 million) when it crosses the block in March.

A Racing Icon with an Unmatched Legacy

The Jaguar D-Type redefined sports car design with its aerodynamically sculpted body and cutting-edge lightweight construction. Built specifically for endurance racing, it secured three consecutive victories at Le Mans, cementing its place in motorsport history.

Among these exceptional machines, ‘OKV 2’ stands out. Moreover, it was one of the first three Works D-Types built for Jaguar’s all-out assault on the 1954 24 Hours of Le Mans. Furthermore, with Stirling Moss and Peter Walker behind the wheel, it reached a staggering 172.97 mph down the Mulsanne Straight, setting a new top speed record in practice. Though brake issues forced its retirement, ‘OKV 2’ remained a formidable competitor in European racing for years.

A Star-Studded Driver Line-Up

Few cars boast a driver roster as impressive as ‘OKV 2’. Racing legends including Stirling Moss, Mike Hawthorn, Peter Whitehead, Tony Rolt, and Norman Dewis all took the wheel, testing its limits on some of the world’s most demanding circuits.

After its stint as a Works car, ‘OKV 2’ transitioned to private ownership in 1955. Jaguar’s PR man, Bob Berry, raced it extensively, securing podium finishes at Goodwood and Aintree. Even after a major rebuild following a crash at Dundrod, it continued to compete until 1959, marking five years of relentless racing.

A Well-Preserved Piece of Motorsport History

After its competitive career, discerning collectors acquired ‘OKV 2,’ and Lynx Engineering meticulously restored it in the late 1970s. It later became part of Terry Larson’s collection, where it saw action in prestigious historic racing events such as the Goodwood Revival, Colorado Grand, and Le Mans Classic.

Under its current ownership, the car has continued to make appearances at major motoring events, even reuniting with Stirling Moss in 2011 and making a triumphant return to Circuit de la Sarthe in 2012.

A Highlight of Broad Arrow’s 2025 Amelia Auction

The 2025 Amelia Auction, hosted by Broad Arrow Auctions, promises a remarkable selection of collector cars. In addition to ‘OKV 2’, the event will feature a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione, a 1960 Chevrolet Corvette Camoradi USA Factory Race Car, a 1975 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale, and a 1959 AC Ace Bristol with significant racing history.

With no reserve, ‘OKV 2’ offers a rare chance for collectors to acquire a true piece of motorsport heritage.

Could This Be the Ultimate Jaguar D-Type?

Few cars can match the history, provenance, and racing pedigree of ‘OKV 2’. Its legacy, combined with its outstanding condition and eligibility for historic racing events, makes it a standout opportunity.
