Tesla has recalled the Cybertruck in the US over a body trim piece falling off the electric truck. As you can imagine, a metal piece falling off a stainless steel truck with only sharp angles can be dangerous to other road users.
And this cantrail trim is a big one – it’s the piece that separates the windscreen from the side windows, starting from the A pillar to the final pillar where it meets the bed. On the Cybertruck, it’s shaped like the top of a house.
The recall includes all MY 2024 and 2025 Cybertrucks manufactured from November 13, 2023, to February 27, 2025. That adds up to 46,096 units, which is basically all Cybertrucks delivered in the US up to last month.
“The Cybertruck is equipped with a cosmetic applique along the exterior of the vehicle, known as the cant rail, which is an assembly comprised of an electrocoated steel stamping joined to a stainless steel panel with structural adhesive,” Tesla explained, reported by Electrek.
“The cant rail assembly is affixed to the vehicle with fasteners. On affected vehicles, the cant rail stainless steel panel may delaminate at the adhesive joint, which may cause the panel to separate from the vehicle,” the company said.
The fix involves replacing the cant rail assembly with “one that meets durability testing requirements,” and the difference with the old part is that it will have a better adhesive assembly and “a stud welded to the stainless panel with a nut clamping the steel panel to the vehicle structure.”
As for units awaiting delivery, Tesla will fix the issue before they reach customers. Last year, the electric truck was recalled to fix an accelerator pedal defect that can cause unintended acceleration.
By the way, there’s no right-hand-drive production of the Cybertruck now, but Australia is pushing for RHD. Showcased here in April 2024, you can learn more about the crazy-looking truck here.
