Tesla global sales continue year-on-year decline, after even-slower start to 2025

Tesla deliveries reported another year-on-year decline over the second quarter of 2025 – despite the arrival of the updated Model Y – but they were up slightly on the opening months of the year.

Tesla has reported another year-on-year decline in global sales, despite the roll-out of the just-updated Model SUV.

Data published by the US car giant reports 384,122 vehicle deliveries in the second quarter of 2025 (April to June) – up 14 per cent on January to March 2025 (first quarter) deliveries, but down 13.5 per cent compared to the second quarter of last year.

Tesla sales data is only split into two groups – one for the Model 3 and Model Y, and another for ‘other models’, covering vehicles like the large Model S sedan and Model X SUV, plus the Cybertuck pick-up and Semi heavy haulage truck.

The mainstream Model 3 and Model Y accounted for 373,728 deliveries, or 97.3 per cent of its total. The remaining 2.7 per cent, or 10,394 deliveries, accounted for Tesla’s four other vehicles.

The updated Model Y SUV, which commenced deliveries in the first quarter before progressively rolling out to other regions, including Australia in April 2025, does not appear to have had a major impact on Tesla’s overall numbers.

Compared to 2024, where Model 3 and Model Y accounted for 95.2 per cent of the deliveries total, the current 97.3 proportion does represent an increase.

However, over the same period, Tesla revealed updates to the Model S and Model X, indicating a production wind-down for the pre-update vehicle ahead of deliveries of the revised range.

Year-on-year deliveries of Tesla’s ‘other’ models fell from 21,551 vehicles to 10,394, reflecting slower sales of the Cybertruck among other influences.

The combined total for the first six months of 2025 saw Tesla sell 720,803 vehicles across all model lines. In the first half of 2024, the brand achieved 830,766 sales.

Tesla’s second-quarter slump comes after the brand announced record sales in the fourth quarter of 2024, with 495,570 deliveries across its range.

Outside of the United States, Tesla faces increased competition from Chinese automakers able to deliver competitive driving range and features at similar prices.

Over the same second-quarter period, BYD produced 606,933 battery-electric vehicles from a total of 1.12 million new-energy (electric and hybrid) vehicles overall.

The company’s fortunes have also been impacted by controversy surrounding the political stance of its CEO Elon Musk.

From being a major financial backer of US President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, then holding a position within the government as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency, Musk’s relationship with Trump has since soured.

The very public nature of Musk and Trump’s interaction throughout the changing relationship has seen Tesla’s share price heavily impacted, and public perception of the brand has cooled.

The announcement of Tesla’s second-quarter production results helped share prices rebound by about 3.5 per cent, with the released figures sitting higher than initial speculation from industry analysts.
