Suzuki Jimny XL five-door stop-sale lifted, deliveries to resume

Suzuki Jimny XL five-door stop-sale lifted, deliveries to resume

A pause on orders and deliveries of the five-door Suzuki Jimny has ended as the brand says “no concerns” were found with the 4WD.

Suzuki has resumed sales and deliveries of the popular Jimny XL five-door four-wheel drive after the Indian factory where it is built found “no concerns” with its quality or safety.

And such is the demand for the Jimny XL that many of the vehicles that arrived since sales were paused a month ago are already assigned to customers, who elected to remain in the queue despite an offer to have their deposits returned.

“Following a thorough investigation, Suzuki Motor Corporation has concluded that there are no concerns regarding quality, safety performance, or compliance with regulations for this model,” Suzuki Australia general manager Michael Pachota told Drive today.

No information on the nature of the concern that prompted the stop-sale – applied in a notice to dealers in late July – has been disclosed, other than it was not serious enough to advise existing owners to stop driving their cars.

Suzuki Australia claimed in a media release today that “the decision to temporarily halt sales reflects on our brand’s uncompromising commitment to ensuring” its “global reputation for quality and reliability” remains.

Pachota told Drive “very few” customers took up the offer of having their order cancelled – and deposit refunded – issued a fortnight ago, when there was no timeline for when the stop-sale would be lifted.

As a result, much of the stock buffer Suzuki has built up over the past month has already been assigned to customers in the queue since prior to the pause.

Wait times now stand at two to three months for Jimny XL examples with two-tone paint, and less than 30 days with single-tone paint, Pachota said.

The pause on sales and deliveries did not affect the three-door Jimny, which is built in Japan, and is currently on production hiatus for Australia until an updated model arrives early next year with additional safety features.

Jimny sales across both body styles are down 8.9 per cent year-to-date, to 4921 examples, though it remains the third-best seller in the ‘light SUV’ category.
