The 2025 Geely EX5 now well and truly undercuts the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7, and even the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.
Geely Australia has laid out its claim as the best-value Chinese car brand at its local launch tonight, cutting thousands from its 2025 EX5 electric SUV and offering one of the best aftersales care plans in the country.
Initially, the Tesla Model Y-rivalling EX5 was earmarked for a circa-$49,000 before on-road costs starting price, but leaked pricing confirmed by Geely revealed a $43,490 figure just weeks ago.
However, at the Geely brand launch in Sydney tonight, the Chinese marque has slashed another $2500 off the price, with the EX5 now starting from $40,990.
This not only makes it the most affordable all-electric mid-size SUV in Australia – undercutting even compatriot models such as the Leapmotor C10 (from $45,888), Deepal S07 ($53,900), and BYD Sealion 7 (from $54,990) – but also positions it below the best-selling nameplate in the country, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (from $42,260).
It is also well under the best-selling EV in Australia, the Tesla Model Y that is positioned from $63,400 in facelifted form.
At that price, buyers can nab the Complete grade, while those after more features can go for the Inspire priced at $44,990 – again $2500 below the earlier leaked pricing and well under the $55,000 estimate from last month.
But it won’t just be an aggressive starting price that will get customers into Geely showrooms because backing the EX5 is a seven-year/unlimited kilometre vehicle warranty, eight-year/unlimited-kilometre high-voltage battery assurance period, and up to seven years of roadside assist.
Geely is also running a promotion until the end of April, with early adopters scoring a year public charging, three years’ servicing, premium paint, and a home charger all free of charge – the most comprehensive EV sales campaign in Australia to date.
All locally delivered EX5 models have suspension and advanced safety systems that have been tested, tuned and calibrated for Australian conditions, further differentiating it from rival-brand models like the BYD Sealion 7 and more.
As a reminder, both EX5 variants feature a 60.22kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that enables a WLTP-tested driving range of 430km and 410km for the Complete and Inspire variants respectively.
With 100kW DC fast-charging capability, the EX5 can recoup 30-80 per cent of its battery capacity in 20 minutes, according to Geely, and has vehicle-to-load (V2L) facilities to power devices on the go.
Equipped with a single electric motor driving the front wheels, the EX5 outputs 160kW/320Nm, while its physical dimensions match it against the Hyundai Tucson and Toyota RAV4.
However, its boot space is smaller than the mid-size SUV benchmark, able to accommodate 302 litres with seating for five, or 1877L with the second-row seats folded.
Equipment highlights include a 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, surround-view monitor, power-adjustable and heated front seats, and LED headlights, but a full specification list can be found below.
With the Geely brand now officially launched, the first customer deliveries of the EX5 are due this month.
The EX5 will be the first salvo from the new Chinese brand as it looks to entrench itself in the Australian market and climb its way to a Top 10 position, revealed Geely’s local CEO Lei Li.
Geely is part of the larger Geely Holding parent company that also owns Zeekr, Lynk and Co, Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, Farizon, and Smart – all of which have, or will soon have, a presence in Australia.
