Let’s hope some genius out there has an answer for the way this Arctic White 2020 Corvette Stingray was stolen right out of the owner’s driveway in Sunrise, Fla., in the early morning hours of Wednesday.
Jonathan Stern says he had planned to go fishing this morning, only to discover when he walked outside that his mid-engine Corvette was missing.
A quick look at surveillance footage captured the thief coming by Stern’s house twice, about an hour apart – the last time taking off with the Corvette in a matter of seconds, prompting Stern to call it a real-life case of “Gone in 60 Seconds.”
“So they took the car at 4:45 a.m., but at 3:45 a.m., they pulled up, stopped in front of the driveway and you could just hear the (Corvette) beep so they must’ve reprogrammed the car itself,” Stern explained to WSVN 7 News reporter Faith Graham.
Oddly enough, Sunrise Police found the Corvette abandoned off I-95 several hours later, apparently no worse for the wear though it did have to be towed back to a dealership to be reprogrammed. We’re shocked someone would go to all the trouble of stealing the car, only to leave it on the side of the road.
Stern’s advice now to other Corvette owners: “Install a tracker in your car and put your car in a garage.” We wonder if any C8 is safe outside now since it seems so easy to deprogram.
We thought that the OnStar GPS system already installed in the Corvette would have been enough to track the car, but apparently this thief figured out how to bypass that system and was also able to crank the car without the original key fob.
And since the thief was wearing a hoodie, it’s impossible to identify him so police have made no arrests so far.
Anyone with anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS and may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000 while remaining anonymous.
