Spark Plugs & Ignition Coils – July 5, 2016 Odometer was 201,297, Odometer now reads around 261,000
Battery – Last Changed, 3-4, maybe even 5 years ago, definitely needs a replacement.
Ok, this will be quite a story to provide some context before the real issue.
2001 V70 T5 and it has had a little oil leak onto the top of the engine for quite some time. I only ever saw a little bit of oil so I would just wipe it off once a week or something. Just yesterday I took off the engine cover and saw puddles in the crevasses. I know this oil has been sitting in here for some time because its black and I just changed the oil last week, so it can’t be fresh oil, or if it is, it just recently mixed so I can’t really tell, regardless, there is oil on top. I think it is coming from the Oil Filter Cap Gasket, but I wanted to clean it all up and then diagnose it again after it was clean to see where it was coming from.
In doing so, I removed all the ignition coils, and spark plugs and cleaned up all the components (As pictured). After, I put everything back together, all my ignition coils went into the same slots (none mixed up) but the spark plugs might have been mixed up (since I had to wipe the oil off of them etc). Started the car last night after doing so and it cranked up and started fine.
Fast forward to this morning, I went to start the car and immediately got a rumbling engine and shaky car, which made me believe there was a misfire in the engine. I immediately turned the car off and then went to diagnose, checked all my cables etc. I noticed the right most grounding cable was slightly loose and I switched the two middle spark plugs. Then tried to turn on the car again, and it turned on just fine, no rumbling or shaking. However, after idling for about 5 seconds, the car just shut off completely. And the DIMM module kind of faded a little as if the battery was dying.
Next, I went to check what I had just changed etc and saw no issues. I then went to start the car again, and it cranked and cranked but did not turn over. This led me to believe the spark plugs were bad. I then took one out to check the condition of it and there was definitely some build up on the bottom of it. Much like the other ones, seems pretty normal to me considering their age. Which then lead me to believe they need to be replaced. (Obviously). Lastly, I went to start it up one more time and got this sound (I attached a video) it seems like it can’t turn over, either because A. the battery is dead and not generating enough power to start the car [which i wouldn’t be surprised since its quite old] or B. the spark plugs are bad and showing their age. or C. Both of these options. lol
I then left it and did not try to start it again to not cause any more issues, so it is just sitting in the garage now. My next course of action would be to get new spark plugs and a new battery. If there is any other tips or things to consider before doing so I would love to hear it. Or any other cause of issues that might be leading to this let me know.
Everything was working fine up until last night when i removed the spark plugs and ignition coils.
Attached a link to the video of me trying to start it now.
