smart #5 EV previewed in Malaysia – Brabus, standard RHD show examples due here in a couple of months

Earlier this week, smart Malaysia put up a teaser post showing a couple of close-up photos of the smart #5, hinting that the EV could be making an appearance in Malaysia. Right on cue, the five-seat SUV has popped up, doing so at the Malaysia Auto Show 2025. The #5 that’s on display at the event is a left-hand drive unit, and is a Summit edition model for the Chinese market.

Revealed in August last year, the smart #5 isn’t an SUV body-style sister of the #1 and #3, but is a much larger offering, underpinned by a PMA2+ platform featuring 800V electrical architecture. In China, the #5 is available with four powertrain options, and these are:

  • RWD 340 PS (250 kW)
  • RWD 363 PS (267 kW)
  • AWD 587 PS (432 kW), with 224 PS (165 kW) front and 363 PS (250 kW) rear motors
  • AWD 646 PS (475 kW), with 224 PS (165 kW) front and 421 PS (310 kW) rear motors; #5 Brabus

Two battery packs are available for the smart #5, with a 76 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit for the RWD variants and a 100 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery for the AWD cars.

In terms of range, the RWD versions offer 570 and 660 km of CLTC-rated range (467 km and 541 km WLTP), while the 100 kWh unit on the AWD versions provide around 720 km of CLTC-rated travel (or roughly 590 km WLTP). Charging aspects aren’t detailed, but the brand says that the battery can be juiced from a 10 to 80% state-of-charge in just 15 minutes through DC charging.

The Summit preview unit is a dual-motor version with the 100 kWh battery, but it remains to be seen as to which configuration (RWD or AWD) of the regular #5 will make it here. What we do know is that the Brabus version revealed last month is certain, followed by what should be a #5 Premium, with word being that we might not have to wait very long for the right-hand drive versions of these to appear – we may be looking at a couple of months, tops.

Whatever the case, novelties to expect include dual 13-inch AMOLED display screens, a 20-speaker Sennheiser Signature Sound System, 256-colour ambient lighting and the ability to fold the rear seats flat into a king-size in-car suite. Key interior figures include 1,530 litres of rear storage space, a 72-litre frunk and 34 smart compartments.

More on the #5 when the RHD versions go on preview here in the coming months.
