Santander Consumer UK has launched a training initiative to help dealers on its books manage growing buyer interest in electric vehicles (EVs).
The new module is designed to support the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to EVs, equipping sales teams with practical knowledge and tools.
The move follows the introduction of the government’s Electric Car Grant (ECG).
While the grant is expected to stimulate demand for new EVs, Santander Consumer UK believes the knock-on effects for the used EV market could also be significant.
Steve Franklin, commercial director at Santander Consumer UK, said: “With the recent introduction of the government’s EV grant and the forthcoming September plate-change, we anticipate increased customer enquiries across both new and used EVs with dealerships needing to be ready to respond.
“Whether those customers buy a new or used EV depends heavily on the confidence, product knowledge and clarity offered by the salesperson.
“Our online training module helps sales teams tackle the most common EV-related concerns expressed by customers, including suitability, charging requirements, range anxiety and uncertainty over total cost of ownership.”
The training also supports staff in delivering effective EV transition consultations, ensuring customers are clearly guided through their decision-making process.
Franklin added: “This training is about empowering dealership staff to have more informed and balanced conversations with prospective EV customers.
“Dealership sales teams need to be ready to speak confidently regardless of grant-eligibility. Those that do will be in the strongest position to benefit from the opportunities and the wider shift in consumer interest, while delivering the best possible outcomes for customers.”
The online training module went live this week and is available exclusively to Santander Consumer’s dealer and OEM partners through its Learn on Demand platform.
“The initiative is part of the business’ ongoing commitment to supporting partners through the automotive industry’s transition towards electrification.”
