Safaricom Surpasses 50 Million Customers Ahead of Its Silver Jubilee

In a landmark moment, Safaricom PLC has officially crossed the 50 million customer mark on its mobile network in Kenya. The milestone is a testament to the trust, loyalty, and enduring partnership the company has fostered with Kenyans since its inception in 2000.

The announcement comes just months before Safaricom’s 25th anniversary celebrations in October, capping off a year-long customer appreciation campaign that has brought services, rewards, and heartfelt connection to communities across the country.

“We are honoured by the trust that over 50 million Kenyans have placed in us,” said Dr. Peter Ndegwa, Group CEO, Safaricom PLC. “This milestone reflects the deep connection we’ve built over the past two and a half decades. As we approach our silver jubilee, we recommit to being a force for good and to creating what’s next for our customers.”

Throughout the past year, Safaricom intensified its customer-first strategy, launching initiatives such as Sambaza Furaha and M-PESA Sokoni. These efforts have enabled the company to show appreciation and bring services and joy directly to customers’ doorsteps — reinforcing its purpose-led philosophy.

From a humble beginning of just 17,000 customers in 2000, Safaricom’s journey has mirrored Kenya’s transformation into a digital powerhouse. The company has consistently led from the front, pioneering innovations such as M-PESA, which has evolved into a full-fledged digital financial ecosystem that empowers millions daily.

Safaricom’s growth story is not just limited to Kenya. In Ethiopia, the company recently celebrated surpassing 10 million customers, further solidifying its presence in the region and signaling strong progress toward its ambition to become Africa’s leading purpose-driven technology company by 2030.

“Our journey has always been about putting customers at the center,” added Dr. Ndegwa. “Moving forward, our focus will be on deepening our impact, personalising experiences, and accelerating Kenya’s digital transformation.”

Safaricom’s legacy is built not only on connectivity and innovation but also on socio-economic impact. In the last financial year alone, the company contributed KES 722 billion to the Kenyan economy and sustained over 1.28 million jobs. Through the Safaricom and M-PESA Foundations, more than 8 million Kenyans have benefited from community projects in education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.

As Safaricom steps into its next chapter, the 50-million milestone is more than just a number — it’s a celebration of collective progress, innovation, and shared purpose.
