Right Headlamp Control DTC – Not the same question as usual (I think) | SwedeSpeed

Posted on March 5, 2025 By rehan.rafique No Comments on Right Headlamp Control DTC – Not the same question as usual (I think) | SwedeSpeed

Hi there, firstly I’d like to apologize for yet another headlamp failure thread, but I promise I have searched this forum and many others and also googled a ton over the last 4 weeks but what I have found has slightly confused me even more as I’ll explain briefly below.

I am hopeful someone will be able to point me in the correct direction so that I can resolve this issue.

Vehicle:
2012 XC60 T5 2.0
MPS6 gearbox and
B4204T7 Engine number
South Africa

Request:
Please help me determine where the HCM (Headlight Control Module) is in my vehicle.

Below I detail what I experienced, what I’ve done and researched and why I am asking for help.
My sincerest thanks to anyone who is able to assist me.

Short background:
1. After a massive storm, my right headlight got condensation in it and refused to switch on.
2. I took the headlamp off, dried the interior and it still didn’t work.
3. I replaced the ballast, and the headlight now works but with a DTC that appeared.

Issue I’m experiencing:
1. Both Lights work, but the right-side beam doesn’t lift up and then drop back into the correct height on startup, only the left does
2. Warning on Dashboard as below:

Gauge Measuring instrument Speedometer Tachometer Trip computer

DTC: (According to my Vida)
372: CEM-B103D86 Right Headlamp Control. Bus Signal / Message Failures. Signal Invalid

What I’ve done:
After much googling and research here on the forums and other forums, I saw a few potential fixes:

1. Ride Height Level Sensor on rear axle – I replaced mine with a new unit
2. Potentially the Ballast is faulty – I replaced my Ballast with a new one.
3. Potentially the Ballast although new is still faulty – have swapped mine between left and right and its’ still the right-hand side that doesn’t lift and then settle into the right height.
4. Its maybe the HCM (Headlight Control Module) – This is my next attempt to fix this issue but here is where I am confused because I see on the forums, google and Vida different locations for the HCM.
I can’t seem to find it.

Here is where Vida says it is: (after letting it scan my Vin to establish my Vehicles details)

But my headlamp does not have that as per below:

Carbon fibers Hood

My Vida then in another section says it’s here:

Is that under the bonnet? under the wheel arch lining? or under the dashboard? I just can’t find any information anywhere online about the HCM’s location.

On the Volvo online store is shows the HCM elsewhere as per below:

I don’t have this in my headlight unit either.

Then on another thread in this forum, the poster said his was under his passenger side seat, under the carpet and a metal plate, and then behind the wiring loom but that was for a XC90, so I am hesitant to rip up carpets and remove seats for no reason.

Here’s where his on the XC90 was:

Electrical cable Car seat Car door Windshield Wire

SUMMARY:
If you have read this far in the thread, I thank you sincerely, and if you have any suggestions, direction, questions or assistance, I am willing to gratefully accept all of them and try each of them to potentially solve this issue, as I am confused as to where my HCU is and I just hate amber lights on my dashboard.

Thank you kindly.
Rory
