Public transport operator Prasarana Malaysia has achieved an average of 1.18 million trips per day across its train and bus services under the Rapid banner in 2024, which is an all-time high figure for the operator, reported The Star.
“This represents a 24% increase compared to 2023, which recorded a daily average of 955,000 [journeys], transport minister Anthony Loke said. The increase in ridership was attributed to several initiatives towards improving the reliability of Prasarana’s buses and trains, as well as the full opening of the Putrajaya line in March 2023.
Improvements made last year included the addition of new trains in to the rail network, particularly for popular Kelana Jaya LRT line, and the increase in trains and service frequency was matched by the decrease in service disruptions when measured in mean kilometres between failure (MKBF); Prasarana aims to attain an MKBF figure of one million km in 2026, according to the report.
Any disruption longer than five minutes is logged, and MKBF is measured as the distance accrued by train services on the same line before the next disruption is logged. The longer the distance travelled before the next disruption happens, the greater the reliability of the line, and operators in nations such as Singapore and Hong Kong regularly achieve MKBF figures exceeding one million km, The Star reported.
Of the five train lines operated by Prasarana – Kajang, Kelana Jaya, Putrajaya, KL Monorail, and Ampang – all showed improvements except the Ampang line, which saw a drop in service reliability. The top performer is the Putrajaya line with an MKBF score of 1.35, or 1.35 million km between failures, while the Ampang line recorded an MKBF score of 0.31, or 310,000 km.
Klang Valley commuters have a wider rail network to look forward to this year, when the LRT3 Shah Alam line begins service in September, the report wrote. Meanwhile, users of the My50 unlimited travel pass will be able to top up the passes by e-wallet in May. “This means they do not need to line up at a manual counter to renew their My50 pass,” Loke said.
