A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is like a more traditional hybrid, such as the Toyota Prius, in that its powertrain is a combination of a battery-fed electric motor and a gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine (ICE). However, unlike traditional hybrids (HEVs), a plug-in hybrid’s electric motor actually powers the drive wheels for modest distances by itself. In a typical HEV, the electric motor most often labors in more of a supportive role. For example, it helps the ICE to accelerate and assumes some of the load of other electrical functions, like the air conditioning.
Many hybrids can drive the wheels for very short distances at low speeds, like going down a driveway. A PHEV brings no such limitations. Charting Plug-in Hybrid Range
We’ve broken out the various 2025 PHEV models by size and category. We provide each vehicle’s electric-only range and their total combined electric and ICE range. Where we don’t have actual range numbers from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), we provide the manufacturer’s (Mfg) estimate or indicate the number is coming.
PRO TIP: Remember, whether it’s the EPA’s or the manufacturer’s number, these are estimates often based on ideal conditions and consistent driving behavior. Your personal experience will probably be different.
