Over 17,000 Rivian EVs recalled due to headlight issues

Over 17,000 Rivian EVs recalled due to headlight issues

Posted on February 21, 2025 By rehan.rafique No Comments on Over 17,000 Rivian EVs recalled due to headlight issues

Rivian owners in cold weather may be experiencing issues with their headlights.

The startup automaker issued a recall for 17,260 R1T pickup trucks and R1S SUVs due to the headlights possibly failing to illuminate in the cold.

The recall only affects 2025 model year R1T and R1S models, and the automaker believes 2,905 vehicles are experiencing the issue.

The issue stems from incorrectly configured parts from a supplier making their way into the headlight assembly. Vehicles build between April 29, 2024 and Feburary 3, 2025 are suspected to be included in the batch of vehicles.

The issue is said to occur only at vehicle startup in cold temperatures. Users will be met with an error stating “Low beam lights not working. Service low beams soon” in the digital gauge cluster.

Rivian noted that one, or more, headlights not illuminating in the cold doesn’t meet the legal requirements set forth by FMVSS 108, which deals with lights, reflective devices, and associated equipment. The result is diminished lighting performance resulting in reduced visibility in certain conditions. This can increase the risk of a crash.

Rivian said it’s not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to this issue.

Rivian first became aware of the issue on December 20, 2024, immediately opened an investigation, and determined the issue and filed a report with the NHTSA on February 6, 2025.

Rivian said it will replace the headlight control module on affected vehicles.

Notification of the recall will be mailed to owners beginning on or before March 28, 2025, according to Rivian.

The Rivian R1T and R1S were refreshed for 2025, and that included a revised headlight system with adaptive lighting units. The R1T was the only pickup truck to be named a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS.

Consumers seeking more information can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 or Rivian at 888-748-4261. Rivian’s reference number for the recall is FSAM-1612 while the NHTSA campaign number is 25V-085.
