Nissan will introduce a new compact car that will be based on the upcoming Twingo, the manufacturers have announced in a joint statement.
The upcoming Twingo will be built on Renault’s AmpR Small platform, otherwise known within Nissan as the CMF-BEV platform which underpins the 2026 Nissan Micra, itself a close relation of the Renault 5 EV. The Renault Group will develop and produce a derivative of the Twingo for Nissan from next year, while the upcoming model will be designed by Nissan, the manufacturers stated.
The announcement means that the Twingo nameplate will live on, after the model was reported in 2021 to be discontinued at the end of its third generation, and its replacement will be based on what would be the Renault 5 EV.
This comes as part of a wider plan for the reorganisation of certain aspects of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, which sees the Renault Group acquire the remaining 51% of Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Limited (RNAIPL) that is currently owned by Nissan, which will see the Renault Group take full ownership of RNAIPL.
Both Nissan and the Renault Group will continue to jointly operate the Renault Nissan Technology & Business Center India (RNTBCI), in which Nissan will retain its 49% stake, and the Renault Group will retain its 51% stake, the joint statement read.
Meanwhile, the Renault Group and Nissan have agreed to a new alliance agreement that sees the “lock-up undertaking” of cross-shareholding reduced to 10%, down from 15% currently. Nissan has also been released from its commitment to invest in Ampere, the Renault Group division tasked with designing and building future EV models, while continuing on agreed product projects.
“The Framework Agreement… confirms the attractiveness of our products with Twingo as well as our ambition to grow our business on international markets. India is a key automotive market and Renault Group will put in place an efficient industrial footprint and ecosystem,” said Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo.
“Nissan is committed to preserving the value and benefits of our strategic partnership within the Alliance while implementing turnaround measures to enhance efficiencies. Our goal is to create a more agile and effective business model that allows us to respond quickly to changing market conditions and conserve cash for future investments,” Nissan president and CEO Ivan Espinosa said in the joint statement.
