Hyundai Motor already started the development of the next-generation IONIQ 5. A model that on its second generation will premiere Android-based operating system including Google Maps as its navigation system when launched in 2026. The announcement was made during Hyundai’s CEO Investor Day in August 2024, highlighting the company’s commitment to enhancing the driving experience through advanced digital solutions.

A Milestone in Navigation Technology

The next-generation IONIQ 5 (known internally as NE2) will operate on an Android-based operating system, introducing a larger and more advanced center screen to host Google Maps. This move underscores Hyundai’s dedication to delivering state-of-the-art technology to its customers.

Google Maps offers exceptional features, including precise navigation, real-time traffic updates, and a vast database of searchable locations. Hyundai’s decision to integrate this platform aligns with its goal of providing drivers with a more seamless and efficient driving experience.

Roadmap for the New IONIQ 5

Hyundai plans to launch the next-generation IONIQ 5 equipped with Google Maps in stages. The development timeline includes:

  • Test Vehicles: The first prototypes, designed to perfect the integration, are already in production.
  • Mass Production: The rollout of mass-produced vehicles is scheduled for 2026.
  • Market Launch: Initial sales will target the U.S., with production at Hyundai’s Meta Plant in America, before expanding to other regions.

This careful approach ensures the system meets global standards and customer expectations.

Driving Innovation in the EV Market

The integration of Google Maps is more than a technological upgrade—it positions Hyundai as a leader in the competitive EV market. With many global automakers opting for other navigation solutions, Hyundai’s partnership with Google represents a bold step to stand out.

The collaboration also extends Hyundai’s relationship with Google, which includes their work on autonomous vehicle technology with Google’s Waymo subsidiary. The IONIQ 5, already a part of the Waymo fleet as a Robo Taxi, highlights the potential for future innovations.

Looking Ahead

As the global automotive market increasingly shifts toward electric vehicles, Hyundai’s integration of Google Maps signals its focus on innovation and user-centric design. The next-generation IONIQ 5 is set to redefine the driving experience, blending cutting-edge technology with the practicality and sustainability of electric vehicles.

By prioritizing technological excellence, Hyundai is shaping the future of transportation and reinforcing its role as a pioneer in the industry.
