- McLaren’s Lando Norris won the first round of the 2025 F1 season
- The 2025 F1 season has 24 races on the calendar, including three in the U.S.
- The season has five rookie drivers, plus youngsters Liam Lawson in Gabriel Bortoleto in full-time seats for the first time
After the long winter break, the Formula 1 World Championship kicked back into action this past weekend with the Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit.
The wild race, which was marred by wet weather, saw McLaren’s Lando Norris start on pole and finish in first place, with his only real challenge coming from reigning world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing, who finished second.
The race was also the first for this season’s five new rookies: Andrea Kimi Antonelli at Mercedes-Benz AMG, Jack Doohan at Alpine, Oliver Bearman at Haas, Gabriel Bortoleto at Sauber, and Isack Hadjar at RB. The slippery conditions claimed both Hadjar and Doohan early on, and later Bortoleto as well. Antonelli shined, finishing fourth in the race, one spot behind teammate George Russell.
Liam Lawson also made a return this season with a full-time seat at Red Bull, replacing Sergio Perez. Lewis Hamilton, Carlos Sainz, Nico Hülkenberg, and Esteban Ocon are all at new teams—Ferrari, Williams, Sauber, and Haas, respectively.
Lewis Hamilton’s highly anticipated debut at Ferrari turned out to be lackluster, with the seven-time world champion both starting and finishing in the middle of the pack. Sainz had a worse start at his new team, with the Williams driver crashing out on the first lap.
The new season, which will host 24 races, marks F1’s 75th anniversary and serves as the final chapter of the current regulatory framework, which has been in place since 2014 when the sport transitioned from V-8 engines to turbocharged V-6 units combined with complex hybrid systems. The V-6 hybrid format will continue into F1’s next era starting in 2026, but with significantly enhanced electric power output.
