Fiat 500 Hybrid Assembly Line

The first pre-production Fiat 500 Hybrids are being shown off by Fiat this week. The new model is known as the 500 Ibrida (Hybrid in Italian).

The Fiat 500 Ibrida joins the Fiat 500e full electric vehicle, which has been on sale since 2020. Disappointed Fiat fans worldwide who couldn’t make a full electric 500e fit into their lives were elated to hear last year’s announcement that Fiat will make a hybrid version.

Production of the much-anticipated 500 Ibrida (Hybrid) is on schedule, with series production cars leaving Fiat’s Mirafiori plant set to begin by November. Fiat has set the production target at over 100,000 units per year at full capacity.

The Fiat 500 Hybrid is said to use a 3-cylinder FireFly engine with a 6-gear C514 manual transmission combined with a 12-volt BSG (Belt-integrated Starter Generator) electric motor and a lithium battery.

The 500e Hybrid reinforces Fiat’s commitment to sustainability and local production, with over 70% of units made in Mirafiori being exported.

Olivier Francois, FIAT CEO, says, “500 Hybrid offers affordable electrification and iconic style, proving social relevance is core to our mission.”  “With the 500 Hybrid, we are strengthening production at Mirafiori to ensure the plant’s productivity and meet the demand. Our roots are in Italy and it’s no coincidence that the two most iconic FIAT are made here: the Panda in Pomigliano and the 500 in Mirafiori.”

Preliminary information says the Fiat 500 Hybrid will use the Mild Hybrid type powertrain of the previous generation 500 and Panda models. That means a powertrain that combines the latest 3-cylinder FireFly 1 liter 70 HP (51,5 kW) engine with a six-speed manual transmission and a 12-volt BSG (Belt-integrated Starter Generator) electric motor and a lithium battery.

Rumors in Italy suggest that the Fiat 500 Ibrida will have a base price of 18,500 Euros, or about 800 Euros more than the previous generation 2024 model. For comparison, the fully electric Fiat 500e starts at 29,500 Euros. When and if the Fiat 500 Hybrid will make it to the United States has yet to be announced.
