I made a spur of the moment decision on a deal That seemed too good to be true and it was. I purchased my 2010 XC60 from an auto auction and long story short when I got it in my possession, the catalytic converter had been stolen and replaced with a quick fix y fitting, basically muffling the noise. (I didn’t realize this until their terrible welding job failed) Anyway, i had some ofd electrical things with the alarm and realized the sunroof motor had been removed, so I bought a new one and that somehow seemed to fix the alarm issues. I had the oil changed and the car ran great for about 4 months and then I left to take my son to school about 3 miles away and got half way there and at a stoplight, the car started sputtering.l like it was going to die. It did t have any power when i pushed on gas and was making a noise that was associated with something turning. (As I sped up it got faster) I made it to the school but called a local mechanic who said he thought it sounded like the water pump and I had it towed to his shop. He opened the hood had someone start the car. They stuck their heads under there for maybe 15 seconds and shut it off. Came in and told me they thought it was going to need a top end and /or timing chain and that the parts weren’t thag expensive compared to the labor charge which was more than double the cost of parts. So it sat for a couple weeks and I had it towed back to my house-he said it would drive, but risked a lot more damage. After getting it home, I needed to move it and when I started it, it made a totally different sound…..a knocking noise like piece of metal in a dryer. I don’t know what to do with it. The body is clean. Interior is perfect. All the power stuff works fine. Its a GREAT car with only 150,000 miles on it. But I’m a single mom of 3 little boys and we were hit by a firetruck in my other vehicle and were on foot for months before the city settled my case. But I still don’t know what to do with my volvo. I love this car and only drove it for a few months, but I know it’s worth a lot more than what I’ll get if I sell it as is but I need to know what my options are and if the fact that it has been sitting for about 8 months now has caused any other damage. Am I better off to get whatever I can from it and cut my losses? Or do I start taking the engine apart and rebuild it or do I buy a new engine and replace it? (I’m in Oklahoma City but I don’t know any mechanics that work on volvos or have any established relationship with a volvo dealer here either. Help!!
