Prasarana and Touch ‘n Go have announced that the My50 monthly unlimited travel pass can be activated and renewed through the Touch ‘n Go eWallet mobile application from July 1 this year. This is part of the Malaysian government’s direction in digitalising public transport systems, said transport minister Anthony Loke.
This digitalisation of the My50 unlimited travel pass will enable users to carry out the activation and renewal of their monthly pass from their own device, without being required to queue at counters, and travellers will no longer need to use their MyKad to do so.
The latest step in digitalising the My50 pass requires the Enhanced Touch ‘n Go card with NFC functionality, a smartphone with NFC capability and a verified Touch ‘n Go eWallet account.
In-app activation and renewal of the My50 unlimited travel pass is to be carried out as follows:
- Download the Touch ‘n Go eWallet app into an NFC-capable smartphone
- Register your account and complete the eKYC (electronic know-your-customer) process
- Select the My50 travel pass within the app
- Hold the Enhanced Touch ‘n Go card with NFC to the smartphone
- Select the My50 travel pass and choose an activation date
- Agree to the terms and conditions and complete the payment
- Tap the selected Touch ‘n Go card to the phone once more to activate
Once the steps above are completed, users can then embark on their unlimited journeys for 30 days on LRT, MRT, BRT, RapidKL bus and MRT feeder bus routes.
As with the My50 pass that was originally introduced in 2019, the eWallet-activated and reloaded My50 pass is for Malaysians, even if users will no longer need to scan their MyKad.
For travellers who are yet to be ready to switch to the Touch ‘n Go eWallet for the renewal of My50 passes, the existing method of renewing at physical counters using the MyKad is still applicable.
“This aligns with aspirations of digitalising the nation’s public transportation systems, and supports the nation’s agenda of cashless transactions,” Loke said. Prasarana will be expanding its digitalisation initiative to other products such as the MyCity and MyTourist passes, he added; more information on these will be released in due course, according to TNG Digital personnel.
