I don’t know what axial flux motors are, but if they can get me to 88MPH! and back to the future, then I’m all in. The Mercedes Concept AMG GT XX isn’t some retro-futuristic idea—it’s an EV concept packed with cutting-edge technology, wrapped in a design that feels like it came straight out of the late 1990s. This strange juxtaposition reflects Mercedes’ indecisive design language across its model range, often veering from elegant to downright awkward.
So, what is the Mercedes Concept AMG GT XX all about? Like most concept cars, it’s partly a publicity stunt and partly a creative outlet—a chance for the design team to let their hair down and deliver something bold and emotionally evocative.

The downside? The AMG GT XX will likely never reach production as-is. Most concepts don’t. What we will see is a distilled version of it—elements trickling down into future models. Because ultimately, the real purpose of the Concept AMG GT XX isn’t the design; it’s the groundbreaking technology underneath.

The Concept AMG GT XX by Mercedes-AMG is a groundbreaking electric sports car that previews a future high-performance four-door model based on the AMG Electric Architecture (AMG.EA). It features a revolutionary drive concept with three ultra-compact axial flux motors, developed in collaboration with YASA, delivering over 1,000 kW (more than 1,360 hp) and enabling a top speed of over 360 km/h.

At the heart of this innovation is a newly developed High Performance Electric Battery (HP.EB), inspired by the AMG ONE and Formula 1 technology. The battery offers high repeatable power output and uses cylindrical cells with direct cooling for optimal thermal management. This enables extremely fast charging performance, allowing around 400 km of range to be added in just five minutes using an 850 kW, 1000-amp charging system.

The vehicle’s performance and efficiency are enhanced through dual High Performance Electric Drive Units (HP.EDUs). The rear HP.EDU contains two axial flux motors with compact planetary gearsets, while the front includes a booster motor that engages only when needed. A Disconnect Unit optimises energy use by decoupling the front motor during steady driving. Oil and water cooling systems maintain optimal operating conditions, and silicon carbide components are used for high-efficiency performance under extreme loads.

In terms of design and user interface, the CONCEPT AMG GT XX features an emotional and aerodynamic exterior and a digital cockpit with two large LCD displays—one 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 14-inch multimedia touchscreen—angled toward the driver for optimal usability.

A novel sound system is integrated into the design, with external speakers housed within the headlights to emit a unique driving sound and enhance pedestrian safety. At the rear, the innovative MBUX Fluid Light Panel with over 700 programmable RGB LEDs enables visual communication through a 3D-pixel-style light display.
The Concept AMG GT XX sets new standards for electric mobility, merging cutting-edge performance, advanced battery technology, and futuristic design, and is slated to enter series production in 2026.
