Come to think of it, a pick-up truck is a decent balik kampung vehicle. Modern trucks have good comfort and decent space at the back, and the view out is high and nice for both driver and passengers. With a lid, that massive bed becomes a giant boot that’s sure to accommodate everyone’s stuff. Bad kampung roads, muddy fields, gravel? Piece of cake.
If you’ve been entertaining the idea of a truck as a daily car, the new Mitsubishi Triton is a good candidate. It’s more square-cut and macho looking than before, and is 55 mm longer, 115 mm wider and 35 mm taller than its predecessor. The 3,130 mm wheelbase is 130 mm longer, which translates to good legroom.
The latest Triton is powered by the new Hyperpower 4N16 2.4-litre turbodiesel with 184 PS/430 Nm, with the Athlete getting a higher 204 PS/470 Nm output – that’s 20 PS/40 Nm more than the previous range-topper courtesy of a twin sequential turbo arrangement. The ability to go anywhere is guaranteed, thanks to seven drive modes and Active Yaw Control on top of MMC’s Super Select 4WD II system. On the other hand, Mitsubishi claims improved comfort and NVH.
There’s good safety too, active and passive. The AT Premium and range-topping Athlete variants come with a full ADAS pack (including auto high beam for the LED headlamps) as well as seven airbags, including one for the driver’s knee. Full specs and walk-around video in our launch report.
Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) is having a Triton Raya Rewards campaign that runs from now till the end of March, and the company is dangling a carrot that’s as striking as the truck’s Yamabuki Orange colour. Go for the top Triton Athlete, priced at RM165,980 on-the-road without insurance, and you’ll get three years of free maintenance plus RM2,000 rebate, or RM5,000 without the free service – your choice.
The Triton AT Premium is tagged with an even better offer. The Raya deal for this is two years of free service plus a RM6,000 rebate, or RM9,000 without the free service. Based on its RM145,980 RRP, the max discount would put this well-equipped variant well below RM140k, making it an interesting proposition next to typical school run SUVs.
