The world simply can’t have enough SUVs, with the automakers offering them in various shapes and sizes. Mitsubishi has added another one in its global lineup, this time for the ASEAN markets. The all-new Destinator that debuted in Indonesia is a family-friendly SUV with three rows of seats and a rugged design.

While the exterior might bear some resemblance to the recent spy shots of the upcoming Pajero, the Destinator is a whole different story. The production version of the Mitsubishi DST concept from last year rides on a FWD platform derived from the smaller Xforce. However, it gets a more potent turbocharged 1.5-liter engine with 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque.

The mill is exclusively mated to a CVT gearbox, sending power to the front wheels. Still, the comfort-tuned suspension, five drive modes and generous ground clearance make the Destinator suitable for the rough roads and harsh weather conditions of the target markets.
From the outside, the Destinator stays true to the original concept with a commanding grille and a sculpted bodywork, although some details have been toned down for production. Changes include the slightly redesigned grille, lightning units, and bumpers, conventional mirrors and thicker pillars. The 18-inch alloy wheels look a bit small for its size, but the proportions are better than your average budget-oriented SUV in the ASEAN region.

The Destinator measures 4,680 mm (184.3 inches) long, with a wheelbase of 2,815 mm (110.8 inches). This means it is slightly larger than a Toyota RAV4 but slightly smaller than the Mitsubishi Outlander.
Inside, we find seven seats arranged in a three-row layout and several storage solutions. The digital cockpit is a let down compared to the sleeker setup of the concept, comprising a 12.3-inch infotainment display and an 8-inch instrument cluster. Equipment can include a premium sound system by Yamaha, ambient lightning, a panoramic sunroof, and various ADAS.
The Mitsubishi Destinator will make its first public outing at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show on July 23. Sales in Indonesia will begin on the same day, followed by its launch in other ASEAN markets including Vietnam and the Philippines. The SUV will also be available in South Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa.
This is a developing story…
