MG confirms Cyberster GTS for production

Amid a flurry of new cars shown at Shanghai, MG has confirmed one more for its ranks. Speaking at the show, Jozef Kaban, design head for MG’s parent company SAIC, has confirmed that a coupe version of the Cyberster is coming. Apparently the positive response to the GTS concept seen at Festival of Speed last year “made it happen”.

It would make sense for a fully fledged hardtop to emerge this year, given the MG B GT will celebrate 60 years in October. And with the initial hype of the Cybster having faded just a tad, there would surely be some enthusiasm to have the spotlight shone on its halo model again. Given the pace of EV development, a coupe may well arrive as part of a wider Cyberster range facelift. Kaban was speaking at the Shanghai reveal of the next car in the Cyber series, the X SUV, has debuted at the Shanghai show. Exact details on the SUV are a little thin on the ground for the moment – and the concept has been shown without an interior – though it’s still a pretty serious statement of intent. Because it doesn’t look anything like MG has ever made, Cyberster included.

Hard to think that the company which makes cars like the 3 and ZS has also produced this. But then this has been specifically designed with younger buyers in mind, hence the matt black, big wheels and light bar. What such squareness might do for efficiency isn’t exactly clear yet. It might not look like a Cyberster, but it seems the Cyber X is cut from the same cloth when it comes to making an impact – there are even pop-up lights. You’re going to look the first time one of these comes the other way, that’s for sure.

It’s been suggested that the Cyber X will be built on SAIC’s (the owner of MG) new E3 EV architecture, which features something called ‘cell-to-body’ technology, that should boost both interior space and ground clearance. Handy for a family-focused SUV that will rival cars like the Skoda Elroq. If indeed the Cyber X comes here; there’s no confirmation yet of UK sales, though given the substantial popularity of the genre and the growing presence of MG over here there must be a case to be made. And it’s different, if nothing else – we’re definitely keen on that sort of thing. More on the Cyber X as we have it.
