If there’s one thing Mercedes-Benz doesn’t do, it’s rest on its laurels, especially when it comes to its flagship. While we’re waiting for a more comprehensive S-Class facelift, the brand decided to give its luxury sedan a subtle refresh for 2025 or the 2026MY for those in North America. The updates may seem minimal at first glance, but they add meaningful upgrades in both tech and customization.

For years, Mercedes has been fine-tuning its Drive Pilot system, which—until recently—was limited to slow-speed operation in heavy traffic, capped at 37 mph (60 km/h). Now, the system has expanded significantly. In both the US and Germany, Drive Pilot can now function at speeds of up to 59 mph (95 km/h) on highways in regular traffic, making it more viable for real-world use.
Drive Pilot Steps It Up
Before you say your Tesla can do the same thing, Drive Pilot is different because when it’s enabled, drivers are permitted to do other things, like reading a newspaper or watching a movie. This isn’t just a rebranded cruise control. It’s a true Level 3 system that uses more than 35 sensors, including LiDAR, ultrasonic sensors, radar, and cameras, to deliver the data it needs to operate safely and independently.
Mercedes is also testing turquoise-colored turn signals in the US and Germany to indicate when the system is active, although this feature has not yet rolled out to customer cars.
Tech Touch-Ups and AI Onboard
The technology upgrades don’t stop there. Over-the-air updates of the MBUX infotainment system now incorporate ChatGPT into the car’s voice assistant. Microsoft Bing has also been added, together with Google satellite view in the navigation system. Entertainment is getting a boost too. Owners can now purchase the Entertainment Package Plus through the Mercedes-Benz Store, which adds YouTube access and Sony’s RIDEVU video streaming platform, tailored for rear-seat passengers.
More Ways to Make It Yours
Customization options have also grown for the 2026MY. The Manufaktur program is now available globally, offering over 50 new exterior color choices and 25 new interior combinations, including special wood inlays.
Mercedes also added the S-Class Edition to the range. The new model is fitted with the AMG Line and Night Package and is available in five paint finishes, including Night Black Magno and Opalite White Bright. Among its distinctive features are dark shadow gloss and black door sills, three Nappa leather options, 20-inch AMG wheels, and a special emblem in the infotainment system.
Pricing and availability for the 2026 S-Class will be announced by Mercedes-Benz at a later date.
