The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is no stranger to evolution, but for 2026, it’s taking a bold step back in time. Say hello to the “Edition Stronger Than the 1980s,” a limited-run G-Wagen that blends vintage aesthetics with modern tech and performance. As its name suggests, this special edition pays homage to the original G-Class from the Eighties, reimagined through the lens of today’s engineering.
Limited to just 460 units globally, the Edition Stronger Than the 1980s is essentially a retro-themed version of the new 2026 G550, and it doesn’t shy away from its old-school influence. It resurrects the Agave Green paint made famous on the 500,000th G-Class celebration model from 2023, complete with amber turn signals, headlight guards, and a full Night Black Magno contrast treatment across the bumpers, brush guard, side sills, and mirrors. For those wanting a slightly different throwback, Mercedes also offers Cream and Colorado Beige—two additional colors that nod to the original G’s early palette.
Each example is detailed with historic badging across the hood, rear door, and spare tire carrier, and comes standard with the Professional Line Exterior package. That adds rugged all-terrain tires, front and rear mud flaps, and a functional roof rack capped with a ladder at the back. Silver 18-inch wheels round out the retro look while preserving a rugged stance true to the G’s utilitarian roots.
Inside, the nostalgia hits even harder. Mercedes decorates the cabin with Dove Grey plaid fabric inserts, reminiscent of the tartan upholstery seen in early G-Wagens. A badge reading “1 of 460” is embedded in the center console to reinforce the edition’s exclusivity, while the passenger-side grab handle proudly proclaims “STRONGER THAN THE 1980s.” Door sills reveal a topographical map of Schöckl mountain, the famed test track in Austria where every G-Class earns its stripes.
Underneath the retro visuals, however, this is a thoroughly modern G-Class. Power comes from a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with a mild-hybrid system, generating 443 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. It’s mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and the iconic full-time four-wheel-drive system with three locking differentials. Performance figures are unchanged from the standard G550, which clocks a 0-60 mph sprint in around 5.3 seconds, though this special edition may run a tick slower due to the added off-road hardware.
Technology hasn’t taken a back seat either. Despite the plaid seats and analog charm, this G is outfitted with digital displays for both the driver’s gauges and infotainment system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, as does the full suite of luxury and driver-assist features expected from any modern Mercedes.
Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but exclusivity rarely comes cheap—especially when wrapped in nostalgia. Given its unique trim, limited availability, and full G-Class capability, the Edition Stronger Than the 1980s is sure to command a premium over the standard G550. Mercedes says deliveries are expected to begin later this year, and with just 460 units available, this time machine of an SUV won’t be around for long.
