The Lewa Safari Marathon, one of the world’s most unique and purpose-driven races, is set to celebrate its 25th anniversary on June 28, 2025. Over the past quarter-century, the marathon has become a global symbol of wildlife conservation and community development, raising over KSh 1.3 billion (US $9 million) since its inception in 2000. Organized by the international conservation organization Tusk and Kenya’s Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, the event has united runners, sponsors, and communities in a shared mission to protect Kenya’s wildlife and uplift its people.
The marathon’s success has been fueled by the unwavering support of its lead sponsors, Safaricom and Huawei. Safaricom, the event’s main sponsor since its inception, has played a pivotal role in driving the marathon’s impact. Huawei, a steadfast supporter for over a decade, has also been instrumental in ensuring the event’s growth and sustainability. Their collective contributions have not only strengthened conservation efforts but have also inspired other corporate partners, including Access Bank, ICEA Lion, AMREF, and Safarilink, to join the cause.
Dr. Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom, highlighted the company’s commitment to the marathon, stating,
For 25 years, we have supported the Lewa Marathon, a cause that goes beyond conserving Lewa Conservancy to uplifting the surrounding communities, aligning perfectly with our purpose of transforming lives.
To mark this milestone, Safaricom has committed KES 10 million to the 2025 edition and will host the Safaricom Karura Mini Run in May as a fundraising initiative.
Huawei Kenya’s CEO, Gao Fei, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of preserving Kenya’s iconic wildlife.
“Huawei is delighted to have supported the Lewa Safari Marathon for the past 17 years. The conservancy is home to some of the rarest wildlife, and we know through our support and that of Safaricom, a difference has been made in preserving these iconic species for future generations as well as the surrounding communities.”
The funds raised by the marathon have had a transformative impact on both wildlife conservation and local communities. The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Man & Biosphere Reserve, has been at the forefront of protecting critically endangered species such as the mountain bongo, Grevy’s zebra, and black rhino. The conservancy also safeguards some of East Africa’s last remaining ‘super-tusker’ elephants, ensuring their survival for future generations.
Beyond wildlife, the marathon has been a lifeline for local communities. The funds have financed six hospitals and clinics, providing essential healthcare to approximately 40,000 people in rural Kenya annually. Education has also been a key focus, with bursaries and infrastructure improvements benefiting over 10,000 students. Additionally, the marathon has empowered 724 women artisans through beadwork and beekeeping initiatives, fostering economic independence and sustainable livelihoods.
Mike Watson, CEO of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, emphasized the deep connection between conservation and community.
“The Lewa Safari Marathon embodies the vision of a future where all Kenyans value, protect, and benefit from wildlife. As one of Kenya’s pioneering conservancies, Lewa has seen remarkable growth in wildlife populations and biodiversity. Equally, our community programs have expanded to support thousands, reinforcing the essential role of conservation in securing sustainable livelihoods.”
The marathon’s 25th anniversary is not just a celebration of past achievements but also a call to action for the future. The 2025 event aims to raise a record-breaking amount for conservation and community projects, uniting runners, conservationists, and businesses in a shared mission. Participants from over 40 countries will tackle a high-altitude course through the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, home to some of the highest densities of wildlife in Kenya, including the iconic ‘Big Five’—buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, and rhinoceros.
Nick Bubb, Chief Executive of Tusk, reflected on the marathon’s legacy, stating,
“The Lewa Safari Marathon is more than just a race—it’s a marathon with purpose. For 25 years, it has united runners from around the world in support of Kenya’s extraordinary wildlife and communities. Celebrating this milestone reminds us of the power of collective action and the impact we can achieve together for the future of Africa’s
