Kia cars are the most commonly clocked nearly-new vehicles, with almost one in ten (9%) showing a discrepancy between their odometer and recorded mileage.
That’s the conclusion of mileage check firm carVertical which put Nissan in second place (6.84%) followed by Dacias (6.16%), Subaru (5.04%) and Citroen (4.72%)
Matas Buzelis, car expert at carVertical, said: “Drivers in the UK are overpaying for clocked cars to the tune of more than three quarters of billion pounds a year.
“This fraudulent practice is not only cheating them out of their hard-earned money, it’s tricking them into buying a car that has travelled many more miles than they’re aware.
carVertical said an estimated 2.1% of second-hand cars in the UK have been clocked. Car clocking has been an issue in the UK and Europe for decades.
In 2018 cap hpi said the UK has seen a 25% surge in clocking over the past three years. Data specialist Cap hpi has revealed figures showing that the number of cars being clocked in the UK has risen to one in 16.
The same year the NFDA accused the government of ignoring the growing problem of clocked vehicles.
In September 2017 the government published a consultation paper on clocking and the following year it published a response where it failed to propose solutions to the problem.
In 2015 the NFDA launched a campaign to combat clocking and outlaw mileage adjustment companies in the UK.
