Kia EV9 Off-Road Prototype Spotted Testing in Korea: WKNDR Incoming?

Kia EV9 Off-Road Prototype Spotted Testing in Korea: WKNDR Incoming?

Posted on July 10, 2025 By rehan.rafique No Comments on Kia EV9 Off-Road Prototype Spotted Testing in Korea: WKNDR Incoming?

Kia appears to be gearing up to expand its EV9 lineup with a rugged, off-road-focused variant. A prototype that closely resembles the Kia EV9 WKNDR concept was recently spotted testing in South Korea by our colleagues at Healer TV, hinting at a potential production version of the adventure-themed SUV.

The camouflaged prototype showcased several distinct features that align closely with the WKNDR concept Kia unveiled earlier this year, sparking speculation that the Korean automaker is preparing to launch an off-road-capable version of its flagship electric SUV.

Key Features Spotted on the EV9 WKNDR Prototype

Photos of the prototype reveal multiple design upgrades tailored for off-road exploration:

  • High-Riding Stance: The test vehicle sits noticeably higher than the standard EV9, suggesting a raised suspension setup for improved ground clearance and off-road capability.
  • Chunky Off-Road Tires: The prototype is equipped with aggressive all-terrain tires wrapped around beefy wheels—essential for tackling rugged trails and uneven surfaces.
  • Front-Mounted Winch: A winch integrated into the front bumper strongly indicates the vehicle’s recovery capabilities, enhancing its utility for overlanding and trail driving.
  • Modified Front Fascia: The front end appears slightly tweaked to accommodate the winch and possibly to improve approach angles—critical for off-road performance.

These elements are strong indicators that Kia is testing a production-ready version of the EV9 WKNDR, originally introduced as a concept aimed at adventurous EV buyers.

A Production EV9 WKNDR Could Fill a Market Gap

The EV9 is already one of the few three-row electric SUVs on the market, but a more rugged variant could carve out a niche in the growing electric overlanding and adventure EV segment. With brands like Rivian and Jeep pushing electric off-roaders, Kia entering the scene with a production EV9 WKNDR would give consumers another compelling option—especially with the brand’s competitive pricing and technology.

What to Expect from the Production Model?

While Kia hasn’t confirmed any details, the production EV9 WKNDR could feature:

  • Dual-motor AWD with enhanced torque vectoring
  • Specialized drive modes for snow, mud, and sand
  • Roof-mounted accessories and gear-hauling options
  • Extended battery capacity for longer off-grid trips

If launched, the EV9 WKNDR could become a game-changer for adventure enthusiasts seeking a capable yet fully electric SUV.
