Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) has signed a KES 54 million partnership with the Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund Trust (UTNWF Trust) to strengthen water conservation efforts in the Upper Tana watershed.
The investment is aimed at addressing systemic water risks, improving water accessibility, and enhancing climate resilience along the Tana River Basin, which plays a crucial role in supporting Nairobi’s water supply and Kenya’s hydropower generation.
Securing Clean and Sustainable Water Sources
Eric Kiniti, Group Corporate Relations Director at EABL, emphasized the company’s commitment to safeguarding natural resources:
“Our partnership with the Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund Trust underscores KBL’s dedication to protecting vital water sources. By investing in conservation, we aim to ensure clean and safe water for communities, support agricultural livelihoods, and contribute to a healthier environment.”
The Upper Tana watershed is essential to Kenya’s water security, supplying 95% of Nairobi’s water and generating 65% of the country’s hydropower. However, climate change, deforestation, and increased water demand have put pressure on this critical ecosystem.
Eng. Nahashon Muguna, Managing Director and CEO of Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company, highlighted the growing need for sustainable water access:
“With Nairobi’s rapid population growth, securing long-term water availability is crucial. This partnership between KBL and the Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund Trust is a significant step in ensuring Nairobi’s residents, businesses, and industries continue to access reliable water supplies.”
