Buying a Jeep Wrangler is a matter of careful balance. The SUV has earned its legendary off-road status, and properly equipped, can climb dunes, crawl rocks, and bound over sand better than almost any other vehicle sold today. But speccing one for off-road use means trading away some on-road comfort.
For many of us, the Wrangler we want to take to Moab is not the Wrangler we wish to take to work every day.
When Jeep designed the extraordinary Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid (PHEV), they shifted the balance toward commuter comfort. The 4xe can travel up to 21 miles on electricity alone before using any gasoline.
It’s no performance slouch. At 375 standard horsepower, it’s one of the most powerful Wrangler models available. But Jeep designers seemed to reason that anyone buying a Wrangler but concerned about fuel efficiency must be using it as a daily driver.
So, 4xe trims tend to favor pavement-friendly features. That left at least a few shoppers out. There’s a market for an off-road focused PHEV Wrangler, Jeep has decided. In 2025, they’ll get their own trim level.

All-Terrain Tires, Rock Rails, and More
The 2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Backcountry is based on the upscale Sahara trim, which means creature comforts like heated seats, leather upholstery, and an 12.3-inch touchscreen.
Jeep plans to build just 5,800 units for North America. The company lists them at $66,185 (including a $1,895 destination fee), but limited availability likely means markups.
It also gets steel bumpers, a Mopar grille guard, and rock rails on the assumption that you plan to beat it up. A standard front trail camera helps navigate obstacles, and 275/55R-20 General Grabber all-terrain tires give it more grip in mud and snow than the usual set on a PHEV Wrangler.
A standard Jeep Power Box allows you to use the PHEV battery to power accessories in the field. Three auxiliary switches allow you to install powered accessories.
We love the look of the thing. The hood, fender, and swing gate get unique black topographic map decals.
They can be painted any body color you like and comes standard with a 3-piece body-color hardtop, though a one-touch power top is available.
